This way he won't get me confused with his other girlfriend

Back when Justin first got my number, he didn’t know me very well. He got my number at [gasp!] church. Yes, you did just read that right. Think of every lame joke that has been made about LDS singles wards and apply it right there. I’m over it. Whatever.

So, when he got my number he put me in as “Natalie from church”. No, I did not know this at the time. Because FOR SURE I wouldn’t have let that slide. I would have reminded him of my last name and make him put heart emoticons after my name. Ok, I wouldn’t. That totally would have scared him off. Truth be told, I didn’t know he put me in his phone as “Natalie from church” until we had been dating about 2 months. I asked him why it was still listed as that and his response was typical. “Um, I just have never changed it.”

Typical boy.

So I asked him, “do you know my last name?” He promptly answered correctly and I gave him a kiss for passing the test. First test in a relationship, MUST KNOW GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIENDS LAST NAME. Whew! Glad he passed that one.

So, fast-forward 4 months to this last Friday night. We’re at a restaurant waiting for our food and I happen to be playing with Justin’s 1990s phone. I can barely figure out how the stupid thing works, but somehow, I manage to make it to his contact list. And low and behold, this is what I see:

Dating 6 months and I am still “Natalie from Church”. I told him I was going to change it immediately. But then, I just thought it was funny. And so I kept it.

However, I’ll quiz him every once and a while to make sure he remembers my last name.

What Brings Us Closer

This past weekend was one of heartache and joy. Heartache for the fact that we will all miss “Grandma Great” and her contagious giggle, smile and warm hugs. But also of pure joy being surrounded by family, who all came together to celebrate her life and the life we shared together. The whole family spent many hours at Uncle Dan’s sitting in the living room reminiscing about Grandma, flipping through scrapbooks, eating yummy food, telling funny stories, passing babies, sharing tears and giving plenty of hugs and words of comfort. I am so grateful for the Smith family, I truly have been blessed to be a part of such a fun loving group!
When someone you know passes away, it brings the harsh reality that life truly is precious. If anything it has reminded me to try and be a better person, you never know when your time or someone you love will pass on, so you better show them your love while you can.

Popeye's Orange Julius

February 12th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

One of my top favorite green smoothies!
I’ve had quite a few questions regarding our smoothies, and raw/organic lifestyle. We are not 100% RAW nor are we vegetarians. I guess you can say I try to do 60% raw 40% cooked food each day, and we don’t eat nearly as much meat/dairy products that we used to, but they are still in our diet. The food blog that is in the works will go over all the tiny details and will give stepping stones on how to get to where you want to be and why we believe eating this way is beneficial. But in the mean time I thought I’d share with you one of my favorite green smoothies. It tastes just like an Orange Julius, but this version is packed with nutrients… not sugar! Speaking of green smoothies, on the side of my blog you will see a link to the Green Smoothie Girl’s website. Her site has heaps and heaps of information. Go there, watch her videos, read her words, hear about the transformations people have experienced by having green smoothies daily… it will blow your mind and hopefully inspire you to maybe give it a try! And the best part about it is they actually taste great! My kids will beg me to make them smoothies everyday.
Right now I only have one of her books in my library, The Green Smoothies Diet. I LOVED this book. I have picked up plenty of health books and read to about page 5 and my head is swimming with information. Robyn has a very easy to read style and yet she still manages to pack in all that information without making it feel overwhelming. Personally I want to get her 12 Steps to Whole Foods which has over 175 recipes and heaps on good information. (I’m hoping this will be a Mother’s Day gift!) I’ve done a few food photo shoots for Robyn and have had the opportunity to taste some of these recipes and they were so so yummy.
Whew! I have really rambled on here now! Just to give you a little update, we did some filming for our food blog today! Which means we are a tiny bit closer to going live and when I mean a tiny bit closer I’m talking about 6 plus weeks! But in the mean time I hope to give you a few tastes of what it might be like. For example our recipe today…
POPEYE’S ORANGE JULIUS
-by Katie Dudley

We all know oranges are packed with vitamin C but they are also rich in a compound called citrus limonoids, which have been proven to help fight a number of varieties of cancer, including that of the skin, lung, breast, stomach and colon. Who doesn’t want extra protection against these cancers?! I love me some oranges!

Did you ever watch Flipper?

January 1st, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

I grew up with Nickelodeon in my house and that meant I watched Flipper quite regularly. I dreamt of living on an island and having many days paling around with my best friend Flipper. Because really, Flipper is way cooler than Lassie…. I’m just being honest here.
Former dolphin trainer Ric O’ Barry, the man who captured and trained the first five dolphins who played Flipper, attempts to stop the deadly cycle he helped create. DEADLY CYCLE?! Really? Well don’t wait a minute longer to find out what this man is doing and why he is so passionate about doing it.

Tonight we watched The Cove. I had never heard of this movie and wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into. I am a lover of Sea World. I’ve only been once about 18 years ago and everything there was dreamy for a girl who grew up watching Flipper and finally got to pet a real life dolphin. That day stands magical in my memory bank. And, for the first 20 minutes while watching The Cove, I kept telling myself, “What ever this movie has to say about people hurting dolphins, I am STILL going to take my family to Sea World.” Guess what, I won’t be supporting any type of Sea World… so help me. Nor will I knowingly purchase dolphin meat… not that I would normally, but you know, now that I know what’s going on.

Please don’t say to yourself, “The Cove, oh no I can’t see that film, it’s about dolphin killing.” Everyone, EVERYONE needs to see The Cove. Not because you all need to go out and save Flipper but because it will inspire you to do something (not necessarily with dolphins) good in your life and leave you feeling empowered. You can make a difference in whatever way you want just like the people in this film are doing.

And since I am on my movie – stick it to the man – soap box let me tell you about another film I am incredibly passionate about, and frankly it has changed my life and the way I feed my family.

“I’ve been eating this food all my life and had no idea where it’s coming from.”

Tell me honestly, do you ever wonder where that beef comes from when you bite into your burger? Or what about that chicken you are eating or feeding to your kids? I used to kick that thought to the back of my head and ignore it, because ignorance is bliss right? I read The Jungle when I was 13 and didn’t eat meat for quite a while, but soon it crept back into my diet and I told myself that what happened “back then” surly doesn’t happen now. But to my fear, it does happen. And I think it’s worse than in Sinclair’s day. To name a few; in January 2008, the FDA approved the sale of meat and milk from cloned livestock, (what is natural about cloned animals?!) serious health issues like diabetes, heart ailments and cancers are natural consequences of high calorie, sugar laden processed foods coupled with our sedentary lifestyles, transporting food accounts for 30,800 tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year, cancers, autism and neurological disorders are associated with the use of pesticides… don’t you want to know what pesticides are in YOUR food? Some of our most important staple foods have been fundamentally altered, and genetically engineered meat and produce have already invaded your grocery stores and your kitchen pantries… the list goes on and on…

Please, please, please don’t talk yourself out of watching this movie. It will change you. I know change is hard, but if we don’t change we can only look forward to disaster in many forms: our earth, our health, our future. Watch Food, Inc before The Cove. YOU are involved with Food, Inc. YOU are a victim of Food, Inc. wether you want to believe it or not.

Go rent the movie, believe you can change, even if it’s just doing something so simple as “meatless mondays”.

Ok I think I am done here. But, if you are interested in more of my eating/belief/lifestyle I have started a food blog with my brilliant sister, Leslie. She has taken her family on a “whole food” journey over the last 3 years and has seen numerous changes in their health and well being. We are hoping to launch and go live within the next week. I will keep you all updated! Til then don’t hesitate thinking about what to do tonight… GO WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!

(there – have I ever been so into your face?)

Yes, we do celebrate the holidays…

December 16th, 2009 Classmate Blogs No comments

I’m playing a bit of catch-up tonight, posting about some of our holiday happenings as well as some random pictures in between. Let’s start with Halloween. Are there any other moms in the world that have to bribe their kids to dress up for school and trick-or-treating? Neither of my kids wanted to and both shed the majority of their costumes with the first few minutes. Nevertheless, we perservered.

We colored some pumpkins. Chase participated by sitting on the table and watching…
Nick, hard at work…

The finished result…

Love this silly boy…

Halloween…

Nick, the cowboy, would not wear cowboy boots or chaps…

Trick-or-treating with the neighborhood crew…

I love this picture…look at that Nick –

Nick loves creating things with his blocks and legos…

We took a quick trip to UT over Thanksgiving. My cute mom made Indian necklaces and headbands with the boys on Thanksgiving day before the big feast…

Cute Jack…

The finished project…

Why do my children never have pants on?

But at least they have undies on! Isn’t this the cutest little naked Indian you’ve ever seen?!

The “babies” with Uncle Daniel…

I think the boys watched ‘Polar Express’ once a day, on whatever screen they could. Combining trains and Christmas…brilliant!
Aunt Marsy (such a thoughtful, helpful, beautiful, fun Aunt and sister) with Nicky-boy…
Nick and Jack…non-stop fun, adventures, pretending, trains, and laughter…

Chase fell asleep on the way home from church last week, normal occurence. What wasn’t normal was that he didn’t wake up when Brad got him out of the car, carried him inside, and put him on the couch!
I asked Nick to gently and nicely wake him up and he did just that. He’s a great big brother…

Chase LOVES to throw things. Toys, household item, and especially FOOD. Messes like this are a normal occurence around here. And I really wish he would keep a bib on…

We had Nick’s friend, Julia, over the other day. Julia asked if I would paint her nails and I jumped at the chance. Nick watched sheepishly for a bit and then HE jumped at the chance when I offered to paint his. It lasted for about 5 seconds before he asked me to take it off, but still a Kodak moment.

This past weekend we took the kids to the ‘Polar Express’ event that our library does every year. They read the book, then load us up on this bus and take us to Santa’s workshop where the kids get to visit Santa and pick out a toy. My kids love this book and were very excited. But they do not like Santa. Nick insisted on seeing him so that he could tell him what he wants for Christmas (Geotrax), but wouldn’t sit on his lap or look at him.

The “train” ride over…

Chase sat like this on Santa’s lap the whole time. And you can’t tell in this picture, but Santa looked like Dumbledore.
On Sunday church was cancelled (ice storm) so Nick and I made gingerbread cookies while Brad and Chase took afternoon naps. This is something my mom always did with us, and it’s been fun to carry on traditions. Nick loves to cook and help in the kitchen…

Nick stole the camera and took some pictures of his own…

Chase helped when he woke up…

Some of the finished product — yummy!

Merry Christmas!

There's three kinds of Christmas wish lists. The first kind is

December 12th, 2009 Classmate Blogs No comments

There’s three kinds of Christmas wish lists.

The first kind is the kind you make when you’re a kid…it’s everything you can think of that you really want and the purpose of making this list is that you can give it out to everyone you know, eliminating any chance that you’ll receive bad toys and ugly sweaters. I used to think that everyone stopped making these lists when they reached the 6th grade, but apparently it’s not something you necessarily age out of. Case in point: my husband keeps his Christmas list up and running all year, so when the holiday season finally comes around he’s ready to recite the 50 things he’d love to find under the tree. (Oddly enough, the list itself doesn’t even seem to get older…lots of action figures, video games, and cartoons…)

The second kind of Christmas list is the kind that you make when you’re feeling like a responsible adult. It’s used as a reference for people (like, say, your husband) who are still likely to buy you bad toys and ugly sweaters. However, unlike the first type of Christmas list, the second type of Christmas list takes into account financial limitations, shopping availability, and what you’ll probably have to buy yourself if you don’t get it as a gift. This is the list that includes things like inexpensive kitchen gadgets, reasonably-priced home accents, and a sensible winter hat.

Now, don’t misunderstand…these are not things that you secretly don’t want. You do want everything that ends up on this list. In fact, finding four pairs of socks and a can opener to replace the one you broke last month will not only please you, it will make you feel triumphant in the face of adult life. Now you don’t have to spend your hard earned money on these essentials, so really you’ve come out of Christmas ahead, marinating in the joy of not having received something bizarre and impractical that needs batteries and a cubic foot of closet storage space. This is the kind of Christmas list that I default to.

I do admit, however, to indulging myself in the third kind of Christmas wish list, which is a type that has become very popular with bloggers. This is the fantasy Christmas wish list…mostly compiled of things that you’ve seen on TV or on the internet and entirely made up of things that would make you immediately cry out, “Oh, you shouldn’t have! It’s way too much!” My sense of anxiety around gifting means that I can’t truly enjoy receiving these overpriced items, but my sense of sheer awesomeness means that I still have fantasies about Santa Clause jumping down the chimney and dropping them off with big gift tags that say, “For Carly, who shoudn’t feel bad about the expense because the elves took care of it.” As I mentioned, I’ve seen many of these lists on other blogs recently and today, since it’s Saturday and since we’re in bed feeling indulgent and since I just sighed wistfully at someone else’s Christmas list, I’m sharing mine with you:

1. Fuji Instax Instant Camera

This instant camera takes film, has low picture resolution, and only prints out business size photos, making it one of the most impractical and yet wonderful things that I’ve seen this year. I’ve been eyeing this baby for weeks, waiting for it to drop from $90 to $20 or so. (No luck yet…)

2. Polaroid PoGo Instant Mobile Printer in Pink

Similar to the instant camera above, this little powerhouse of a printer only prints 2 x 3 pictures, but the pinkness and smallness and instantness and the fact that you can print from either your digital camera or your cell phone makes this thing very, very cool.

3. A Blazer from Topshop

There are a couple of things that I just can’t get enough of in the world of fashion: boots, chain necklaces, knit tights, the overuse of velvet, etc. My number one thing, though, is blazers. I adore blazers and would wear them all the time if they were cheaper. One of my top wishlist sites for blazers is the ever-too-cool-for-school Topshop, but the prices keep me from becoming a frequent shopper. Therefore, practical as it may seem, I’m adding a long, black, Topshop blazer to my wishlist.

4. Little House on the Prairie: The Complete Television Series
I know that this show is cheesier than cheese, but I love it and it gives me warm fuzzies and I’ve definitely watched dumber things on television. Unfortunately, my husband doesn’t share my enthusiasm. He seems to think that because he indulges me when I want to buy seasons of Full House, our household has met its cheesiness quota. So, when I wanted to spend all of our wedding gift cards buying this little covered wagon set, I was cruelly shot down. Because he’s a mean, mean husband.

5. Time Capsule
This device backs up everything on your Mac automatically on a regular basis and there are people who say that you should never even buy a Mac unless you buy a Time Capsule to go with it. I live in constant fear of computer crashes because, although I have great faith in my Mac, I would lose a pretty big chunk of my life if my computer bit the dust. I’m terrible about backing up iTunes purchases, videos, or photos on my own, so this little baby would definitely save me a world of trouble. Unfortunately, until I’m ready to commit to the $300 investment, it will just have to stay on my wishlist.

6. Garmin GPS

Salt Lake City is built on a grid system, with the numbers of our streets getting higher as you go more North, South, East, or West from the center of the city. However, that did not stop me from getting lost completely when learning to drive and I often spent an hour or so longer on the road than I needed to. Once, while trying to drive to Youngstown, Ohio, I drove to Pennsylvania, back to Cleveland, and then back to Pennsylvania. Later, when trying to leave Youngstown, Ohio, I again drove to Pennsylvania instead of driving down to Akron. If I-80 didn’t directly connect Salt Lake City with Columbus, it’s very possible that I would have never gone to law school. I think that this little item is going to have to jump off my wishlist pretty soon…

7. Bearington Baby Collection Giraffe Couture Coat
I don’t have a baby. I also think that spending a lot of money on designer clothing for babies is ridiculous because they can’t appreciate it and they grow out of it before you know it. But this little coat? I can’t help myself. It’s going on the wishlist. It’s actually a little amazing that it isn’t number one…

8. Calphalon Unison Slide Nonstick 10″ Fry Pan with Poacher Insert
I’m practical about most things, but I admit that I’m somewhat of a snob when it comes to cookware. I sort of like cooking and I’ve found that it’s simply impossible to create great meals when you’re using crap cookware. Nothing is more frustrating than spending a lot of time and money on your food, only to have it stick to the bottom of that frying pan your roommate didn’t want when she moved out so you kept it because what the hell. This particuar pan is something that I’ve been drooling over because I have a real penchant for poached eggs. Just imagine all the speedy huevos rancheros and eggs benedict that would happen if this joined my kitchen…

9. Tiffany Metro Ring

I adore my wedding ring, which is a Paloma Picasso ring from Tiffany and Co. One of these days, I want to get another thin band in white gold to set it off and until Paloma Picasso puts out a band like that, my heart is set on the Tiffany Metro Ring in white diamonds. It’s just thin and flat enough to not be annoying and to not overpower my wedding ring. Yes, I know I could get a thin band of diamonds in white gold at jewlery stores across the country, but what can I say? It has to be Tiffany’s!

10. Ultimate WALL-E Remote Control Robot

You didn’t really think that I’d make it all the way through this list without anything Disney, did you? I love this little guy, both for the attention to detail and for the fact that he’ll dance, chat, and explore with you. At $300, this little guy is probably not meant for your average preschooler, so it only makes sense that he should come to live with two grown-up, Disney-lovin’ children.

Ch-ch-changes

December 6th, 2009 Classmate Blogs No comments

Okay, not really that big of changes. This week I have delved into the world of organic food, and me likey. I wish it didn’t cost more than normal food, but we’re going to keep it up. The more I read about what is put into and on our food, the more I don’t like it. I need to find some good websites and such, if anyone has any suggestions.

My real reason for blogging, though, was to post the recipe for what we had for dinner tonight. It’s just too easy, healthy, and yummy not to share.

Pesto Turkey Burgers
1 lb ground turkey
3 tbls parmesan cheese
2 tbls pesto
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/3 cup pine nuts

Mix ingredients together and grill outside or on your George Foreman grill. We served ours with spinach, tomato, and onion and it was DELICIOUS. Thanks for the recipe, Katie!

I just did a food photo shoot today with the Green Smoothie Girl and Desiree (the cook behind the recipes). I am SO excited about this and all the yummy nummy food. After the session Desiree gave me this delicious Coconut Cinnamon Ice Cream. This ice cream is dairy free and has no refined sugar. Great for vegans and all their non-vegan friends! Truly it is absolutely to die for. The recipe booklet comes out this Wednesday. You can go check it out here.

Reality Check

September 23rd, 2009 Dan No comments

Riley has done so well for so long that it’s hard for me sometimes to think of him in any other way but normal. For the past few weeks he’s been having lots of feeding issues where he is just not tolerating being fed. For these kiddos this is a huge deal because they don’t have a reserve of energy in their body. We went to the GI dr. last week and he suggested to give him more time in between each feeding and lengthening the time of the feed and then what ever he doesn’t get during the day give it to him through out the night. We’ve sort of been doing this anyway so we kind of just kept doing what we’ve been doing with no progress. I talked with the SMA nurse yesterday and she told me that unfortunately after time the Type one kids don’t tolerate being bolus fed any more because there digestive systems slow down and they can’t empty fast enough. This was kind of a flash back to when he stopped eating by mouth. One day he was eating fine and then the next day he wasn’t. This is kind of the same thing one day he was tolerating his food and the next day he isn’t. I just hope this isn’t a precursor to more downhill slopes to come. It is starting to be a constant reminder that as Riley approaches is 2nd birthday we may be in for some more surprises.

Today was a big day.Kyle had the day off from work today, so

September 14th, 2009 Dan No comments

Today was a big day.

Kyle had the day off from work today, so I took advantage of his freedom and roped him into an experiment. As part of my path-to-new-Carly, I’ve been trying to break down some of the old restraints that I feel were holding Carly back. Some of these are big things and some of them are quite silly. Like the oatmeal thing.

Fact: before today, I had never eaten oatmeal. Ok, that’s not exactly true. Technically, I had eaten oatmeal, but only in the form of oatmeal raisin cookies. I had never eaten oatmeal itself, in a steaming bowl like they do in the commercials. All of those fitness and health magazines I read have ranted and raved about oatmeal for all these years, but somehow, I managed to miss the oatmeal bus. First, it was just circumstantial, but after a number of years it became a thing. “Oh, I don’t eat oatmeal.” Just like that. Oatmeal was off my list.

I know it’s ridiculous, but when I looked at the things I need to conquer in life to become a better person, oatmeal seemed liked one I’d be able to tackle pretty easily. So, Kyle and I drove up Emigration Canyon this morning in search of the best oatmeal in the Salt Lake valley, which lives at Ruth’s Diner. Ruth’s has been in business for more than 75 years and their food is just to die for, so I had complete faith in their ability to make a decent bowl of oatmeal.

And then I got it…and to their credit, it was very pretty. It had apples and raisins and craisins and walnuts and tons of brown sugar and it came with a pretty little creamer of whole milk. It was just lovely.

And kind of icky.

And a little bit terrifying.

I don’t know what to tell you, but I froze up. I picked up my spoon, but was completely unable to actually dip in and take a bite. Kyle tried to help by showing me how much fun it was to eat his own oatmeal, but watching someone eat oatmeal is not one of those things I’d recommend. It’s kind of gloppy and when you watch them swish it around in their mouths…bleh.

But, this was the new Carly, so after about five minutes I steeled myself, thought about how much I love Oatmeal Raisin cookies, and took a big bite.

Oh. My. Hell.

It was like paste. Warm, gooey, slimey paste. I couldn’t get it to go past the front of my tongue and at the same time I was completely unable to spit it out, so I just sat there and panicked. My eyes started to water and I had to grip the table to get my gag reflex under control. Finally, by tipping my head back and thinking of my favorite funny lines from Weeds (I don’t know why. It just works…), I was able to get it to go down. And that was all I could manage.

Le sigh. This new version of myself apparently does not like oatmeal any more than the last version of myself. Maybe I should have started with skydiving or something.

BUT, that is not the reason that this was a big day!

In other, much more cheerful news, my husband got a new job! He’s been working for Costco since 2006 and although it’s been a great place to work and the benefits have been amazing, he’s been feeling like it was time for a change. I’m proud to say that he’s gotten a job with the Huntsman Cancer Institue at the University of Utah, which is not easy to do because it’s so competitive! It’s a great job and it will be a lot more interesting than what he’s doing now. Plus, the benefits from this job are even better and include half tuition at the U for him and his lovely spouse. Woohoo! In-state half tuition sounds pretty awesome after that whole law school thing. What do you guys think I should major in this time around?

Congratulations, babe. I’m so proud of you!

So sad…Rachel is in the hospital right now because she is having a major issue with her Crohn’s Disease. I will spare you the details, but lets just say things are coming out undigested. Its kind of scary to think you can recognize your food when it comes out. Seconds?

Being the skeptical, logical sister I am, I used to think Rachel was a hypochondriac (so cruel I was) but now I know better. She has to deal with annoying digestive problems every day. Oh Rach I wish I could take away the nuisance!! I would if I could!!

If you want to learn more about Crohn’s you can go to http://www.crohnsonline.com/. And please be nice to your fellow Crohnies because they are dealing with super annoying problems. If you need proof just ask Rach.

Love you, Rach! Sorry your guts suck right now.

Oh and here are some awesome Womb-mate pictures.

Ahhhh…we look like sisters, right?

Pretty typical.

No one can get her to shut her mouth! ha ha

Ahhhhhh I love us.

We’re practically famous.

SMA Walk and Roll

Saturday was the SMA Walk and Roll. It was the first fundraiser for the Utah Chapter. It was a big turnout which made me happy. They had lots of fun stuff…a bounce house, face painting, raffle drawings, pony rides and yummy food. Riley had fun getting his face painted. He thought the brush was very ticklish. It was good to see his physical therapist there supporting her SMA patients. We met up with the Coleman Family and said hi. I actually went to high school with Whit and Lindsey and have not seen them since. They have a type I baby names Jonas and he is a couple weeks older than Riley. It was fun to finally meet them and Jonas. They should be having more get togethers which I’m looking forward to.

Reasons to Love Washington 2

While in WA we went up to Sequim for the annual Lavender Festival. Sequim is the lavender capital of North America so obviously I had to check it out. Plus, that’s where Pete had proposed to me so I wanted to go back. This is what we found.

One of the lavender farms

Apparently even the dogs go all out

Side detour to where Pete took me to eat after he proposed, only then it was night and the moonlight was over the water, but the food is incredible.

We also went up to the Olympic Game Farm which has lots of animals that you can feed bread to. It’s pretty fun, and for being a fairly small area you get to see a lot. We seriously thought our car at one point would be tipped over by some of the buffalo. One of them kept sticking his long gooey tongue in the car searching for food. We tried rolling up the windows, but he would stick his tongue in there at the last moment. We had buffalo drool all over the car by the end. Here are some of our favorites.

This one would not leave us alone. He was HUGE!
