Couscous Garden Salad

July 12th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

I went to dinner at my sisters house last night and they made the yummiest couscous salad. First off you can’t go wrong with couscous, it’s one of my all time favorites, plus it’s just fun to say. Go on say it out loud, you’ll like it. And if you have a garden full of zucchini, squash, tomatoes, basil… this is the recipe for you! LOVE SUMMER HARVEST!

Couscous Garden Salad
1 package (10 oz) plain couscous
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 package cherry tomatoes (or any garden tomato)
1 small green zucchini, diced
1 small yellow squash, diced
1/2 cup fresh basil, sliced thin
1/3 cup green onion, diced
3/4 cup feta
1. make couscous according to package directions
2. mix lemon juice an olive oil together then add to couscous
3. add veggies to couscous mixture and chill for up to 4 hours
4. stir in feta and serve
I think when I make this I might try to substitute quinoa for the couscous. If you haven’t tried quinoa yet, it’s worth a try. The texture reminds me a lot of couscous, but quinoa is packed with high quality protein, it contains all of the essential amino acids, lots of vitamins, it’s gluten free and has been said to be more satisfying than wheat or rice. Whew, OK I am still a nut head when when it comes to nutrition, but if you can substitute nutritional powerhouses like this WHY NOT?! Anyways, enjoy the salad! I’ll have to post a picture when I make it next.

Guess who's 9 months today…

July 7th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

Are you kidding me? Where has the time gone! I have to admit though, I love this age, it is so fun. I am happy to be out of the super baby stage.

Sorry for the picture overload, but I sold my camera (tear) a few weeks ago, and borrowed my dad’s camera so I could take a few pictures, and got a little carried away.

Man I LOVE this little girl. She is dramatic, full of personality, has spunk, smiles all the times, can switch on and off the tears in a millasecond (it’s amazing!), great sleeper, loves to eat EVERYTHING I am eating or drinking, is trying desperately to get up on her knees, moves everywhere by scooting a little, but mainly rolling like a mad woman. She has the cutest smile, I love her eyes (I think she smiles with her eyes, reminds me of my nana), she has started to wave (it is the cutest thing ever!), says “dad,” and my mom said she mimicked “hi” today. She has two teeth that she got before 8 months, which was nuts because Lance didn’t get any until 11 months, and she loves to put anything and everything in her mouth. In fact, I pulled a sticker off the roof of her mouth last week (oops!) I need to be better about keeping stuff off the carpet!

All I can say is how grateful I am that Tallie is a part of our family, we are lucky to have her!

The Man Cave

July 7th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

We have Batman in our bedroom.

Let me explain a little. When Jason and I were first married, I wanted to make all the decisions with him 50/50. Equal partners and all. And I mean ALL the decisions. Oh, there were the biggies like money, college, family. Then there were the others. I’d take the man grocery shopping with me. We’d chat about where to put the couch, how to decorate, what colors to paint the walls, if we should have chicken for dinner, how to do the laundry- everything. I soon learned that this is not a good idea. It actually began more disagreements than good feelings about being equal. I think we both realized this and started into the whole, “I trust you to choose the best TV for our family” or “I know you’ll choose the perfect thread-count for our new sheets.” This system works well for us.

Well, except for the decorating department. Truthfully, it has taken quite some time for our ideas about our home decor to jive. Jason wants orange on pretty much everything. I want sunny Better Homes and Gardens rooms. He thinks nothing of a TV being the main focus of the room. I always want to incorporate the TV into a hutch or mask it as a picture just hanging on the wall. He hangs pictures really high on the wall. I want them at eye level. My eye level. I win about 93% of the time.

This is why we have a “Man Cave” in the basement for Jason. The Man Cave is a happy, manly room where Jason’s stuff is displayed proudly. The TV is right out there with all the cables for the X-Bow showing. The bookcases are full of Clive Cussler novels and comic books. All the drawings and paintings he did in high school are framed and hanging high on the walls. The golf ball collection is displayed prominently over the Love Sac. It is truly a man’s room. And my sweet, awesome hubby doesn’t complain about being banished to the basement.

Soon, I felt a slight twinge of guilt for relegating all Jason’s stuff to the basement while my do-dads sat out proudly. I began to choose some of the more “safe” items to bring up to the living room: his grandmothers tea cups, little ivory elephants his mom had from South Africa, his grandpa’s ceramic leprechauns come out on St. Patricks Day. Now, I feel like we have a pretty good blend of “ours” not just his or hers. Hey, our living room walls are orange after all!

So about Batman. My mom gave Jason two 5×7 prints of Batman for Christmas one year. They are sort of graphic, old school prints- pretty neat actually. When he opened them he said, “I’ll have to find a spot for these in the computer room.” Guilt blow to the head. “Hey,” I said “Why don’t we hang them up in the bedroom.” Blank stares and amazed silence. “Really?” “Yeah,” I said casually, “I think they’d look great next to your lamp, sort of staggered. What do you think?” We hung the pictures the next afternoon. I think Jason was shocked that I’d agreed to it for a few weeks. But now, Bruce Wayne is just a way of life. I wanted Jason to know that things that are important to him are important to me. I just didn’t realize that I would show him that by having the Dark Knight in our bedroom.

And so that is how we have Batman in our bedroom. I go to bed every night, snuggled up next to the man I love and looking over at the framed pictures of the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder.

To tell you the truth, it’s pretty awesome.

After 9 long months of Hailey being prego – she finally popped out the most adorable, teeny, tiny baby.

May I introduce Ava (middle name undecided) Bello

Born: June 15, 2010
Time: 6:30pm-ish
Weight: 5 lb 12 oz (TEENY!!!)

Honestly, I just want to cuddle with her all day. ALL. DAY. I’m half tempted to quit my job, move back in with my parents (to mooch off them, of course) and then hang out with this adorable pumpkin all day.

Look how fab Hailey looks have being in labor for 10 hours!

And of course, here is Ava with her favorite auntie.

I’ll teach her all the important things in life: 1) Humor 2) Clothes and 3) Boys. I won’t let her know that I really don’t know anything about those 3 things, but I’ll buy her things to make her love me. I am not beneath buying her affection. Not at all.

Reason #56 Why We Don't Allow Markers

June 8th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

Jack and Cal mysteriously got a hold of two markers the other day.
Calahan drew a beautiful art masterpiece not only on his walls but also on his feet. Timmy tried to ask him if he was trying to draw on socks, but Cal just shrugged his shoulders.
Jack thought he was being very creative when he drew on both he and Cal.
When I asked him what he was thinking,he simply replied, “Mom, it's the bluuuhd!”
Like duh mom, can't you see that?!
Incase if you were wondering it only took 3 days and
lots of swimming to finally get that marker off!
LOVE THESE BOYS!

Our First Run of Stitches

May 30th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

At church today Calahan was running in the foyer, tripped and bonked his head on the little side table next to the couch. I was in YW and Tim was in Priesthood, so the nursery leaders came to get us. When they told me Cal hit his head, I was worried he was knocked out! But when I came to get him he was just crying and had a huge cut above his eye.
A few Dr's in our ward checked him out and suggested we take him to get stitches.
As you can see Calahan was a very happy patient!
This bandage was the anesthetic to relieve the pain and help numb the area for stitching.
They had a TV in the room so he watched cartoons for the 2 hours we waited to see the Dr.
Emergency rooms are the best… love the wait right?!
Lucky for me my Mom came to the rescue, she was a huge help for ME and Cal.
I don’t think you ever grow out of needing your Mom, especially when scary things happen.
And if any of you know my mom she always has a camera attached to her hip, so lucky for us we have pictures to document every little thing. Thanks mom!
The nurse used a really cool syringe to clean out the wound.
After she was done she gave it to Calahan to play with.
Cal thought it was pretty awesome. At least for the next 5 minutes :)
Finally the Dr. came in to stitch him up. He only needed 3 stitches and he barely blinked when they were  ”fixing” his ouchie. He wooed and wowed the Dr. and nurses with his braveness.
(um do I look completely disgusted in this picture?! yah, I don’t think I was cut out for blood n stuff)
Cal was sporting a really awesome hair band. He was making us all laugh with his crazy hair. After the stitches the Dr. came back and gave him a slushy, which basically did as much healing as the stitching!
Well that's us in a nutshell for our Sunday adventure.
We are just happy that it wasn't any worse and we are super proud of our tough little guy.
Tonight when his Granny asked him how his ouchie was he replied with, “oh it’s all better.”
WE LOVE YOU CALAHAN

May 10th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

Here are a couple cute pictures I took of the Tootles lately. She is 7 months old, and she is SO MUCH FUN!!!

And the latest on Lance…

He went from this…

To this…

Although I absolutely LOVE his long hair (btw it was 8 inches long in some areas when we cut it), it is extremely fine, so it just nats like crazy, and he ended up looking like Russel Brand 90% of the day!!!

So, out with the old, and in with the new do…

In other news, my sister in law and I have recently started making these babies. Yes, they look obnoxious on me since I am just wearing a t-shirt, but you get the idea. They could actually look really cute on a fancy cocktail dress or something.

These flowers, along with our bibs were featured in a fashion show up at Deer Valley on Saturday night put on by the Ballet West models. They were also featured on Park City morning show, so woot woot for us!!!

We are also selling our headbands like crazy, so check them out at your local URBAN BLUES!

Oh I have a good post about yogurt, the good the bad and the ugly. But it’s not quite ready yet, so in the mean time PAY ATTENTION TO LABELS. 2 big things to look out for: High Fructose Corn Syrup and anything with Hydrogenated Oils. I guarantee the yogurt you are eating has one of them listed. What’s the big deal you say? To put it simply, regularly including these products in your diet has the potential to promote obesity — which, in turn, promotes conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. Hmmm not to fun if you ask me! In the mean time avoid those two big mama’s (high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils). You’ll be quick to notice how hard they are to avoid! Then you’ll start looking to the organic foods and notice they (the two big mama’s) have vanished. Anyways, back to the recipe…

I am not a chef! This is just how I like to slice and dice my mangos.

Feel free to use fresh or frozen. If you use fresh make sure they are soft and ripe!
Speaking of Mangos… here is the low-down.

Vitamin Powerhouse

One small mango provides a quarter of your recommended daily allowance for vitamin C, nearly two thirds of your daily quota for vitamin A, good amounts of vitamin E and fibre. They also contain vitamin K, phosphorus and magnesium. Mangoes are particularly rich in potassium which can help reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

my blender was getting too full and I still wanted to add some ice to my smoothie. SO I just put half of my smoothie into a container, covered it up nice and kept it in my fridge until the next morning. Then I got it out and put it back in my blender and just added ice! One big smoothie lasted me two days. LOVE THAT! Such a quick and easy breakfast or snack!

Nothing is more inspiring than hearing other people share their story.
Hope you enjoy this one. It’s so refreshing, especially on a nice warm sunny afternoon.

Things that make me happy!

April 14th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

*Adam Lambert on AI last night. I am still disgusted by his performance at the AMA’s last year, but I don’t know what it is about him, I LOVED him last night on Idol. I kept wishing he could have performed all the songs last night with his energy, enthusiasm, and genius arrangements. I don’t know about you, but Idol this year is SO BORING. It is definitely missing the Adam Lambert showmanship this year…

*Great friends, especially Ella who is so cute and sweet to Lance. This picture totally not posed. In that last month, I have also seen Ella spontaneously put her arm around Lance, hug him, and give him kisses!

*Spending time with my honey!

*Realizing that my husband and son are very similar in some ways…

*Tallie reaching 6 months, hurray! I LOVE this age, it is soooo fun!

We went in for her 6 month appointment and the doctor couldn’t have said it better when he stated, “well, I think it’s safe to say she is taking after her momma!”

Yes, my Tallie Tootles is only in the 10-20% for both height and weight! 14.9 lbs (12%) and 25 inches (22%). Lance at 6 months weighed 16.11 lbs, so I was pretty shocked at how much smaller and more petite Tallie is. But she sure is a doll!

She LOVES her baby food!

And mommy LOVES dressing her up all cute!

She is also learning to sit up on her own… (she has a ways to go, but is getting the feel of it)

…unfortunately this is how she usually ends up!

*Loving this bubble machine. Seriously, one of the best spent $20 in a long time!

*Finishing and hanging up new projects!

*Our new tramp and Lance wanting to jump on it all day long!

*Planting my garden! Got the onions and the lettuce planted, so we’ll see how those do!

Skiing with my babe! Big fan of Spencer’s work doing the advertising for Deer Valley! I also got to go skiing with my dad last Wednesday. It was so fun. Tons of snow, and more importantly, tons of sun!!!

*Out with the old, and in with the new… a new do, that is!

I cut off 11 inches, and I am LOVIN’ it! It just feels refreshing and it is still long enough to put in a pony tail, so it is just perfect. These aren’t the best pictures, but you get the point.

And finally I LOVE LOVE LOVE the SUNSHINE we have been having. I think every day is better with a little sunshine, so here’s hoping that no more snow falls this Spring and we have nicer weather and tons of sunshine from her on out!

It’s so nice to know we have a super hero living in our house. Even if he does stay up all night, leaves crumbs on the couch, falls asleep in random places, uses the word “way” way more than any other 2 year old we know, ie; way scared, way cold, way wet, way dark, way cool… I think you get the point, when he kisses you he gives the best sound effects of mmmmmwuhhhhhh to emphasize the love in the kiss, has a mad obsession with getting the eggs out of the fridge for no particular reason, loves to go potty, both on the potty and not, will do practically anything for a penny.

We love you Super Cal… no need to grow up too quickly!

The Oscar Party I’m Not Having

March 7th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

Happy Oscar Day!

You know, there was a time (not too long ago) when the Oscars were right up there with Christmas for me. They definitely had the Fourth of July beat, if that gives you any hint as to how much I loved them. (That’s a lot of love, people. A lot of love.)

It all started in high school, when I decided I was going to win an Oscar. And believed it. Because when you’re in high school, you can decide things like this and it doesn’t even occur to you that it might not happen. For the record, I also decided that I would win a Tony, marry for money, and be thin forever. Ha ha.

Even after my Oscar dreams dimmed with the end of my career as a costumer, I held onto my love for the awards show. I made an event of it every year, eventually culminating in elaborate costume parties with themed desserts, signature cocktails, and prizes for Oscar Bingo.

And then…well, I suppose life happened. It’s harder to throw costume parties in mid-March when you get older because that’s a whole lot of silly for a Sunday night. I managed to pull it together only once in law school. The other years were either half-hearted attempts with short guest lists or plain old failures (although sitting on the floor of my apartment with Nate and Drew, eating Velveeta Mac-n-Cheese while I hold onto the TV antennae to get reception, will probably remain one of my favorite Oscar parties to date). I don’t know…I just got kind of cynical about the whole thing. The jokes were less funny, the fashion was less interesting, and most of the time I hadn’t even seen the movies.

So, here we are this year, with only a couple of hours before the big show, and no partyness in sight. I could have pulled it together. I could have called people and organized and taken advantage of our housesitting situtation, instead of having a dinner party last night that was completely unrelated to any Academy whatsoever. But I didn’t. I just let it slide by and tonight Kyle and I will watch the show in our pj’s, eating enchiladas that aren’t themed to correspond to any movie whatsoever.

Am I bummed? Yeah, a little bit, but only because I feel like it’s just another step away from something that used to be pretty cool when I was 18 or 22. But, like clubbing and wearing crushed velvet, I guess it’s just one of those things I accidentally grew out of…

(Remind me to cite this post next year when I spend $400 at the local party store on mini-Oscars and lifesize cut outs of George Clooney and Brad Pitt…)

Time to make a POST!

February 28th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

February has come and gone and I haven’t made a post for 2010. Pretty sad I know and I have the same excuse as everyone else…”I’m just so busy.” Life is certainly flying right past me but that doesn’t mean I’m standing still. Jeff is in his second and final semester of grad school at ASU and is busier than EVER! I’m still working with foster youth and loving every second of it. I get to work with 14 amazing teenagers every week. My life is blessed each day by their existence and I’m lucky to know them. I’m even more lucky to have them let me into their lives. I wish I could take a picture and share each of their stories with you. But since I’m not able to do that, I will share some pictures of what we’ve been up to.Not much happened in January but here’s a picture to celebrate the snow we don’t have in Arizona. Some of my family came down for Valentine’s Day and Winston went through the Mesa Temple. In case any of you were wondering…he will be leaving May 4th for the Sao Paolo Brazil South Mission. Hooray for him!
Isn’t is gorgeous this time of year?

Of course, who can celebrate Valentine’s Day without making sugar cookies? I was lucky to have my talented Aunt Tracy and cousin Emma invite me over for some serious baking and decorating. Didn’t the cookies turn out super cute? They tasted as good as they looked…that’s for sure!
Nacho felt the need to celebrate LOVE DAY! He was the dog of the park for VD. The ladies couldn’t keep their eyes off of him.

Lastly, our neighbors who are from India, invited us to celebrate their “Holi Day” or “Festival of Colors.” We ate food, listened to music, and participated in the colorful festivities. I got completely plastered by paint and drenched with water… if you can’t tell by the picture.

So attractive. I will do my best to update more often. As you can see, we are alive and well. Here’s to a lucky March!

Cooking Up Memories

February 9th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

I love breakfast food.

Oatmeal, scrambled eggs, pancakes, waffles, spun honey, orange slices, Cream of Wheat, abelskievers, German pancakes, melon, bacon, Christmas Strata, sausage, omelets, fresh berries, orange juice, French Toast, crepes, hot chocolate, homemade jam and butter on everything.

Breakfast is delicious. Breakfast is my comfort food. Pure love!

Breakfast reminds me of being at the cabin. The fire burning in the wood stove and my Grammy making her famous pancakes that no one can seem to replicate. It reminds me of growing up and my mom making a big pot of Cream of Wheat before school. We’d sweeten our steaming bowls with honey and milk then scoop up the cereal with toast instead of spoons. It reminds me of eating millions of ableskievers topped with homemade buttermilk syrup at the New Years Day breakfast at my Nana’s house. It reminds me of Saturday mornings when my dad made waffles and spun honey to top them with. Or birthday breakfasts with friends over and everyone still wearing pajamas. Or the camping trip when Jason and I ruined scrambled eggs and then ate them anyway, laughing the whole time.

Now, I cook breakfast just about everyday for my family. For sure every weekend. Sometimes for dinner during the week! Something about cooking this simple meal stirs up good memories and love. Sometimes cooking does that to me. Helps me realize that I’m not just nourishing their bodies with this food- but really showing them how much they mean to me, how much I love them. Sharing something I love with people I love! It’s amazing how food does this. How it can stir up memories or help you recall old times- or make a new memory. Of course, no post of mine would be complete without a list…so here are a few other favorite foodie memories of mine:

  • Having root-beer floats always remind me of my Great-Grandma Foulger. I was lucky enough to grow up with this great woman, and cook. She made all sorts of fabulous dishes and desserts. But one of the things I remember most was going to her house and she’d always have the fixings for a root-beer float. And my mom would always let us have one- no matter how close to dinner!
  • My mom’s “specialty dinner” is pork chops and rice. It is divine! I know she says that the recipe is easy, but somehow mine never turn out quite as moist or delicious as hers. This simple meal reminds me of Thanksgiving- when my mom hosts the Gratitude Dinner with all my siblings and we talk about all the things we’re grateful for. It’s this grand display of my mother’s love for parties and family all mixed-up in one.
  • Peanut butter bars make me think of connecting with other women and becoming friends. The “no-matter-what” kind that you don’t feel embarrassed to come over in your pajamas or cry in front of. And I think that is the best kind.
  • Meatloaf has always been on my top ten list of favorite foods. But one meatloaf, in particular, reminds me of Jason. He made this for me on one of our earlier dates as well as several special occasions in our marriage. (Do Friday nights count as “special occasions”?) He has two specialties: meatloaf with Jones Special Sauce and Chicken Enchiladas. Whenever it’s his turn to cook, I’m treated to one of these delicious and satisfying meals. As both are fairly labor intensive, I know I’m loved!

Smells, tastes, sounds…they all can remind us of a spark of memory or a flash of a loved one.
So really it’s not just breakfast.
It’s love.

Love is rocking out to this song (music video at bottom) while driving in the car with my two boys and at the end of the song Jack says, “Mom, can we listen to that one again?!” After we’ve already sung our hearts out to it 5 times before.
Love is also looking in the rear view mirror to see my Calahan doing his best to sing a long. My favorite part is when he sings out “L-O-V-E
I’d be lying if I told you it didn’t bring tears to my eyes and warm fuzzies to my heart.
Today love is rockin’ out.

8:28am Calahan is standing on our dryer door and yells out to me, “Mommy, Cal pee!”
-My little angel peed on my nice clean dry clothes. I sweetly tell him, “Cal, you go pee in the potty, in the bathroom.” Then I plop him on the potty to help remind him of what the potty is and where it is. I exit the bathroom.
8:32am Calahan is stuffing the bathroom toilet with a whole roll of unwound toilet paper.
-I come in to check on my said angel to find him deviantly unwinding the toilet paper and putting it in the toilet. I kindly say, “no, no, no!” and put him on his bed for a time out.
8:34am I am cleaning out the wet gobs of toilet paper from the toilet when I hear Cal yelling to me, “Mommy! Cal poo, Cal poo on the floor.”
-I dash to his bedroom to find 2 gooey poops. Ugh!
8:35am I take my angel and put him back on the toilet. Exit the bathroom to go clean up the poop in his bedroom.
8:36am Cal yells out again, “Mom, Cal poop on the floor!” I run from the bedroom to the bathroom to find poop skids all over toilet and floor.
8:36am I start a bath, undresses my baby and go back to his bedroom to finish cleaning that poop.
8:40am I return to bathing angel, and clean the bathroom again.
TODAY LOVE IS CLEANING UP POOP. At least for the first 10 minutes of chaos this morning!

What’s a person supposed to do when it’s FREEZING outside and the air is so cold it hurts? You can visit friends, play Guitar Hero, fly to a warmer climate (except we have to wait until April because Marshal is in a Kaplan class until then), go to the gym, blah blah blah…or READ A BOOK. I love books! In the past 2 weeks I read 2 different books and they were both super entertaining, but in very different ways. So if you’re a book-lover like me and you’re looking for your next read, here are two of my recommendations. And there are no spoilers so it’s ok to read my descriptions.

My friend Andrea gave me the first book, The Hunger Games. Ok, picture this…some time not too far in the future America has collapsed and there is a new nation called Panem, and the new government is super 1984-ish (as in the book 1984, duh, but you never know who’s reading). Now, Panem is like 1984 because the government is bossy and sneaky but some things are still like America. For example, Panem has REALITY TV! And how does The Capitol (that’s the ruling city/state/whatever in charge of Panem’s 12 districts) use reality TV? To scare, control and suppress its citizens, of course.

The book is about an annual competition called The Hunger Games. Kind of a weird name for a game, right? Well, it’s a NASTY competition where each of Panem’s districts must randomly select two “tributes” (a boy and a girl, both teenagers) to compete in a televised fight to the death. The tributes are basically dropped into an “arena” (but like the size of a national park or Rhode Island) and they have to kill the others to win. Oh, and remember it’s all televised so the entire nation is watching the tributes kill each other.

My mind was racing when I read this book. How cruel that The Capitol forces its districts to sacrifice two young people each year for sport (and a reminder to never rebel). And how awful that it’s a national TV show! Can you imagine? Although the plot might sound brutal, don’t worry. The book is tame and not too graphic. And you will LOVE the main character, Katniss, because she is smart and strong. She’s competing in The Hunger Games and the book is written in 1st person so you get to be right by her side as she dukes it out in the arena.

GO READ THIS BOOK! I read it in less than 24 hours. And then go read the sequel, which I need to buy ASAP.

One thing I should mention about this book before you Ph.D.’s go reading it…this book is “young adult” fiction. But don’t worry, you probably won’t notice. I only knew it was “young adult” fiction because the text was bigger. And maybe it’s a little less complicated than something like Atlas Shrugged but you will be so entertained you won’t care.

Now for the second book…I just finished The Forgotten Garden last night. I loved its complexity, scenery, characters, secrets, surprises, almost everything. This book is DEEP and MYSTERIOUS and COMPLICATED but has less action than the other book (so read this one first). What I didn’t love was the author’s annoying habit of focusing on the scenery and not on the drama. It was kind of like being at the Super Bowl but the announcers are talking in detail about the turf and chalk lines while the game is happening. Like hello author, thank you for describing the pretty rose bushes and flower petals but tell me more about the BIG NAUGHTY, DARK SECRETS that happened in the garden!! I was so eager for the drama (that’s why I read, duh) that I wanted to skip all of the fluff. But that’s just me.

Even though I just kind of complained about the book, I still think it’s a great read. I couldn’t put it down. My mom and sister both loved it too. The book is all about discovering a dark family secret (or two or three). Like why did the “Authoress” put 4 year old Nell on a boat, tell her she’d be right back and never return? And who is the “Authoress” and why did she take Nell from her family in the first place? And why is Linus so creepy…does he love his sister a little too much? And who is “the bad man” and why is Georgiana scared he will find her? So many crazy questions but you get all the answers in the end.

I’m looking for another book to read, so let me know if you have a suggestion. :) Happy reading!

Tonight’s Dinner is Sponsored by Kate

January 13th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

So yesterday, the Fed Ex guy came to bring us a package. When I opened the door, I noticed that there were a couple of boxes on the porch and assumed that he’d brought those as well. I’d been told that someone was expecting something, so I signed for it and didn’t think much of it.

It wasn’t until later, upon closer inspection, that I realized the biggest box was addressed to me…and the return address was Williams-Sonoma (a.k.a. one of my favorite all-time stores).

Yes, the amazing Kate has ambushed me with an incredible present for the second time in a month, this time for my birthday. She’s just that good. LOVE HER!

Tonight I tried it out and this thing is just too cool. First you boil a bit of water in the pan…

And then you add the cover with the removable non-stick egg trays and break an egg into each compartment…

You boil them for about 4-5 minutes and then carefully lift the trays up with a fork and flip them over onto a paper towel to get rid of the excess moisture.

Voila! The perfect poached eggs. Aren’t they just too cute? I wanted to make fifty of them in a big pile (but nobody can eat fifty eggs).

So, instead, I served them with feta cheese over black beans. Mmmmmm…this might be my new favorite meal ever.

THANK YOU, Katelyn!!!! Loveyoumissyou!

P.S. ~ And thank you to my lovely husband for being my photographer…
