We made it!

June 25th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

We are happily hanging around in Houston now. We drove ALL the way from Boston to Dallas, and of course we couldn’t get to our destination without some excitement happening along the way.

Our second day of driving began with me losing our little case full of DVDs and the power cord to the DVD player. Sigh. It must of fallen out of our stuffed-to-the-max car at one of our stops. So we needed to go buy a whole new DVD player, and I wanted it to be one that has a strap to connect to the back of the driver’s headrest. I have only seen those at Costco – so we decided to stop at a Costco sometime that day.

Later that day, somewhere at a truck stop in Pennsylvania, Darren and Paul were in the convenience store and I was feeding Mia baby food in the back seat. I left her in her car seat to minimize the messiness. When I was done I got out of the car to throw the empty jar away. I went to get back in and the doors were all locked somehow! Then I realized that the car keys, my cell phone, purse, and Paul’s phone were all inside the car. Aigh!

So I had to go inside the store and borrow the phone. I called AAA and told them I locked my baby in the car. Luckily it was not a hot day! We decided to give them 30 mins to get there before calling the cops. I was a frazzled mess waiting – but I could see Mia through the window and she seemed ok for most of the time. The last few minutes she was crying. Right when I thought about calling the police the AAA guy showed up to the rescue! He opened up the door and Mia was saved.

Later the same day: we finally track down a Costco in Virginia. It is hard to find and we get there right before closing. Paul runs in to get a DVD player and a DVD for Darren to watch (Darren has been struggling all day without his movies). Paul comes back, we hook up the DVD player. Success! I put in the movie he bought – Wall-E. But the movie won’t play… I look at the case and see that Paul accidentally bougt a Blue-Ray! So we can’t watch it. And the store had just closed.

That was our loveliest day of driving. With all of these stops we only went 400 miles in an entire day if you can believe it! luckily the rest of the journey was pretty uneventful. Whew!

In Houston we are renting a house, and the kids LOVE it. So much space, and a backyard!!

This is my baby when he was 2 years old. I remember this day like it was yesterday. Timmy and I just moved to Philadelphia, we were living in a huge white walled apartment in Bryn Mawr and we were adjusting to life as a “law school family”. I had P-L-E-N-T-Y of time with just my baby and me.
Our days were filled with trips to the library, grocery store, snack time, tv time, reading time, singing time, play time…. and so on. Jack was my buddy, my best friend. At times it felt like he was my only friend, but I was happy with that.
When Jack first came into this world he looked up at me with his big blue eyes and he didn’t make a sound. He just stared at me, peacefully. At the time I had no idea how much love I had for that little baby. The moment I held him, he felt natural in my arms. It was just the beginning of our friendship.
7 months after he was born our little family moved to London. Timmy was in school all day and in the evenings he was busy with his homework. Jack truly was my
anchor. Now how on earth is a 7 month going to be your anchor? It must be a gift from God, because that boy never gave me a reason to get upset. He hardly cried, always slept, took naps on time ate his food… silly things that can really really throw off a mom when they don’t run smoothly. Jack and I walked everyday around the city. We went to museums, libraries, play groups, played at the parks, ate lunch in the squares, did plenty of people watching… he was my best little buddy and never complained. He learned to walk in Russell Square, just up the street from where our flat was. We’d go sit by the fountain and watch the water fall to the ground, Jack would clap and wave to every person that walked by. There was hardly a moment when we were apart.
Today Jack is turned 5. He is wild, and full of energy. Not quite like his peaceful quiet days! His head touches my elbow when he stands next to me. He loves music, loves to dance, asks a million questions, he’s totally into Star Wars, Power Rangers and anything else that has to do with violent fighting and high packed action moves (sigh… really wish this wasn’t so!), he builds train track after train track until he gets the “perfect” one, he loves his little brother and plays the BIG brother role quite well.
Jack will always hold a special place in my heart. He has no idea what a strength he was to me when I would feel so a lone, being so far away from family, living in new places and adjusting to being a Mom. I feel blessed and am so grateful to my creator for letting me take care of this beautiful spirit.
Jack seems to be so grown up, at times I have to laugh because I can’t believe that we are holding a real conversation. I can’t wait to see this little boy keep on growing and developing into the amazing person I know he is. I love you Jackie-boy!
xoxo,
Momma

Riley's New Car

November 12th, 2009 Classmate Blogs No comments

Riley got his power chair on wednesday. I’m calling it his new car because it cost more than my car did when I bought it. I was a little worried that he would have troubles with it as far as holding the joystick but he did great for his first time. He can’t hold his head up so they gave us this cool collar for him to wear. When we first put him in it his reaction was “wow!” and he kept going around in circles. Check out the video for a closer look.

First Bike

We bought Jack his very first bike this past week. He is still getting used to pedaling and getting on and off the bike. Frankly I think he’s scared to death when he rides, but he still loves it somehow. It helps that he is decked out in a Power Rangers helmet, elbow pads and knee pads. He is quite confident as soon as he has all his gear on. He’s only fallen once when he turned too quickly. He got up and scowled at me like it was my fault he fell. (I totally remember doing this to my brother when he tried to help me ride my bike.) Anyways, this is big at our house. Oh and we can’t forget that Calahan was about 10 times more excited about the bike than Jack was. He would have us sit him up on the bike and push him around. Jack just stared at the bike and wouldn’t come near it, but as you can see he eventually warmed up to the idea.

Scootching

On September 3 Logan finally started to be mobile. Well sort of! He can finally get himself where he would like to go in a very funny fashion. It is a mixture between the army crawl and the leg push. Once in a while he will drag himself with one arm for a very short distance. For the most part he will wiggle his legs so fast that his feet get caught on the carpet and that will give him a BIG boost to get to where he is going. Might I add that his arms are doing NOTHING while his feet are pushing him!! He is leaving his face on the ground to be rubbed raw! I am sure the question comes to mind….why don’t I just record it to show you? I swear to you I tried!!! For about an hour straight today I had the camera out and ready and he decided to lay there and suck his thumb. I put toys and things he loves but cannot have, like cords and cell phones in the middle of the room and he would just want to play with the wall. So I would move him to another part of the room and he find something else he could not crawl too, like his books. So I put his books in the middle of the room. He then found a stuffed dog that he has NEVER touched! So I put him in the middle of the room….NOTHING! Not ONE scootch. He is already starting to defy his mother!

Here is what the room looked like while I was trying to get him to scootch…plus it shows what he was doing instead of scootching! That is also the emtpy book case where his books were. He thought is would be fun to play an empty book case instead of the million toys in the middle of the room!!

He also sat up all by himself from lying down on Wed. Sep. 2. He is such a blast to be around!! He pretty much always has a smile on his face. He is a little more grumpy than usual because he has two enormous teeth coming in on the top. He already has two on the bottom but those didn’t take long to break through. The top ones are taking an eternity!

Wheelchair Update

August 18th, 2009 Classmate Blogs No comments

As many of you may know we have been trying to get Riley a wheelchair for the past three months and it’s been quite the ordeal to put it lightly. I have not been happy at all with the experience. Yesterday a friend of mine, Tara, who also has an SMA kiddo, gave me the name and number of a case manager through our insurance. It only took one call from her to the wheelchair people and all the stuff was being sent in. she said that she would call me the next day to tell me the status of the paper work. Hopefully the ball can really start rolling now. Thanks Tara for the info! Tara is also lending us the stroller that she recently got because they aren’t using it right now. Once again…Tara you’re awesome! The one last bump in the road is that they are telling us that they will only pay for either the power chair or the stroller but not both. I think it’s ridiculous because all the other kids with the same insurance got both! Dumb they better give us both! It will be really nice for Riley to have this equipment. It will give him much more freedom and the ability to participate in more things. Now just hurray up already!
