Tomatoes Anyone?

October 27th, 2009 Dan No comments

So with the birth of Tallie, we kind of forgot about our garden until my dad went and looked at it and came inside and said that we had a bunch of tomatoes in our garden still. We had no idea how it avoided getting frozen, but nonetheless, our tomatoes were still thriving!

Because we knew the storm was on it’s way in, we decided to pick all of of our tomatoes and hope they ripen off the vine.

Here is the end product!!! Can you believe it? We still have two boxes of tomatoes and it is almost November! Anyone want any tomatoes, just let me know, I think we can spare a few…

This is not even including the huge bag of tomatoes we gave our neighbors!

I am thinking next year, we may plant some other things besides 16 tomato plants!

If you can't do anything for me, can you give me my money back?

October 27th, 2009 Dan No comments

I’d like to thank all my wonderful friends who commented, emailed, called, and text me after hearing about my grandpa. I am truly blessed to have such wonderful and thoughtful people surrounding me.

In other news, I am sick today. I feared I had somehow manged to be infected with the swine flu… Oink! Oink! and so I called my mom because who else does a grown woman call when she is sick? My mother picked me up and took me to InstaCare where I was forced to put on a face mask and sit in the waiting room. In my sicken mental state, I didn’t think to have my mother take a picture of me. It would have been a pretty one, I assure you. Next time I’m in distress I’ll have someone take my picture so you too can witness my pain.

But the good news is, I don’t have swine flu. Apparently, a mild case of bronchitis is what I have. Thank you doctor for telling me that you can’t do anything for me. BUT, what you could do is give me back my $35 co-pay and I think we should be good. Mmmkay?

Snow fell for a solid three hours today, marking the joyous

Snow fell for a solid three hours today, marking the joyous time of year that means hot chocolate and holiday decorations and fat-hiding sweaters. I honestly could have thrown myself into a snow bank and made an angel of happiness today.

I have never been so ready for winter in my life. I think there’s something about the slowness of unemployed days that makes you just crave the turning of calendar pages. For me, this winter holds all sorts of promise. The promise of holidays with my family, the promise of our likely trip to Ohio some time in the next three months, the promise of a spring that will find me employed in something I love to do…

I know there are people who spend their whole year looking forward to summer’s promise of barbecues and vacations, but I spend the whole year waiting for bundled up days and Black Friday sales. I’m so happy to be starting out this winter in Utah, with the best snow on earth and all that, since the ice storms and grey skies of Ohio winters kind of bum me out.

I wonder how I should celebrate the start of winter…normally, I would bake cookies but with the whole diet thing going on, that seems sort of like self-sabotage. It’s a little early to start my Christmas shopping and I’m not that into winter sports. Hmm, guess I’ll have to keep thinking…

Superstitious…..?

October 27th, 2009 Dan No comments

I was driving by my parents and literally was stopped in the middle of the road by this. I thought it was cool and at the same time sooo creepy so I snapped this pic. “Am I superstitious?” I thought as the black cat stared me in the eye…. I don’t know but it definitely made me think about it! Funny cause I was just thinking today about all the road blocks and bad luck I’ve been having. GREAT.

… What do you do if you are cursed?

I looked up some Halloween superstitions and guess what was first on the list!

Superstitions & Bad Luck Omens

  • Black Cats

Black cats have long been believed to be a supernatural omen since the witch hunts of the middle ages when cats were thought to be connected to evil. Since then, it is considered bad luck if a black cat crosses your path.

  • Broken Mirrors

An ancient myth our ancestors believed was that the image in a mirror is our actual soul. A broken mirror represented the soul being astray from your body. To break the spell of misfortune, you must wait seven hours (one for each year of bad luck) before picking up the broken pieces, and bury them outside in the moonlight.

  • Ladders

In the days before the gallows, criminals were hung from the top rung of a ladder and their spirits were believed to linger underneath. Common folklore has it to be bad luck to walk beneath an open ladder and pass through the triangle of evil ghosts and spirits.

  • Owls

If an owl looks in your window or if you seeing one in the daylight bad luck and death will bestow you.

  • Salt

At one time salt was a rare commodity and thought to have magical powers. It was unfortunate to spill salt and said to foretell family disarray and death. To ward off bad luck, throw a pinch over your shoulder and all will be well.

  • Sparrows

Sparrows are thought to carry the souls of the dead and it is believed to bring bad luck if you kill one.

  • Unlucky Number #13

The fear of the number 13 is still common today, and avoided in many different ways. Some buildings still do not have an official 13th floor and many people avoid driving or going anywhere on Friday the 13th.

Let’s get me some salt and hope I can stay away from mirrors and ladders now!

Happy Halloween!
