Playing “people” is Lyv’s first choice in toys.
Ah-Bee has People at her house- and that’s where Lyvia fell in love with them. She was overjoyed when I found some People at the DI for us to have! She plays with her People just about every morning. We have a house, furniture and families that she plays with for hours on end. She makes up names for them, sends some to work, makes lunch for a picnic, teaches the kids to go potty in the big potty, sends mail from their mailbox, puts the babies down for a nap and takes the kids swinging. When she play’s at Ah-Bee’s house, the family can even go on a car ride to swimming lessons in Bee’s People Jeep!
I love seeing her act out things that we’ve done as a family with her own little people! Going to swimming lessons and having game nights are favorite scenarios. But sometimes listening to her play is eye-opening! The other day the People Mom was telling the People Sister that she “had better stay in her bed for a nap or else no more playing with friends!” Hmmm…I wonder where she heard that?! But I loved coming upon her singing I Am A Child Of God to her Sister People when they were going to bed. (I’m glad good stuff is sinking in, too.)

Lyvia is a sweet girl and a wonderful big sister. We love her!

We are soooo 20th century.

If we are not home- leave us a message. On our answering machine. Yeah- it’s not even voice mail, people! And no, I will not see your name on our Caller-ID, because we have no Caller-ID. I know, I know, “archaic” may be the word you’re looking for. I do have a cell phone that you are more than welcome to call. However, it really is for my convenience. I turn it on when I leave the house and usually switch it off when I get home. Feel free to call me- but be prepared to, what? oh yeah, leave a message.

I remember way back before you had to dial the area code when calling someone.

We get the newspaper on the weekends. That’s right. The actual newspaper delivered to our front porch. It’s wonderful.

Jason tucks in his polo shirts for work. He also matches his belt to his shoes. I haven’t checked in with Clinton Kelly lately, but is that still hip or not?

Using “Mr.” and “Mrs.” are still ingrained in me. If I am addressing someone I don’t know, I always use “Mrs.” or “ma’am”. Or “Sister Peterson” for those who are at our church. Lyvia has been taught this same thing and says frequently, “I think my Sisters at Nursery missed me this week!”

We were talking the other night with my sister (ten years my junior) and her boyfriend about people named Cameron (yeah- a whole other blog post). Jason mentioned Candace Cameron and the two college-bound students gave each other confused looks. “You know, DJ from Full House!” I prodded. “Oh yeah, that’s so old school,” they said.

My house is, what other people may classify as, “country”. I prefer “retro and homey”- but whatever floats your boat.

I say stuff like: Whatever floats your boat. And rad. And jive.

I am a Facebook slacker and Jason has no Facebook page. Apparently, the people who we want to stay in touch with are the people we chat with in real life. We also know nothing about twittering our tweets. (Come on, I blog, people! I can only keep up with so much social media!)

I just learned to text last year.

Fish Lake Family Reunion

June 21st, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

We returned today from my family’s trip to Fish Lake, UT.  My family has never really had an official get-together where we all go away somewhere together, so I hope this will be the beginning of a lovely tradition.  And, what better place to start than at Fish Lake?  If you haven’t been there, you should go.  It’s quite charming.  There were so many fun moments, I will name just a few of my favorites:

1.  Teaching my sister how to say Mytoge (repeat after me: My-toe-gee.  Not toe-my-bee)

2.  Learning how to read a compass, then doing a compass course.  Why do boy scouts get to do all the fun stuff?

3.  Catching a trophy fish with Janey’s Barbie fishing pole.  And I didn’t take a picture!  Dumb, dumb, dumb.  Who is going to believe me?

4.  Getting an unbeatable score of 27,430 at Hand and Foot.  Go team Charlynn and Janelle!  If we had a celebrity couple name it would be Chanelle.  Classy!

5.  Geo-Caching.  It’s like a treasure hunt and a junk exchange all rolled into one!

The whole gang.  Well, those of us who could make it.

My brother David teaching us girls how to read a compass before sending us off on the compass course he set up.

I can’t forget to mention this awesome tree-stand/hut thing we found on our hike.  I think it made the trudge through the woods all worthwhile.  (For the kids and the parents)

Memorial Weekend.

May 30th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

Below are my cute grandparents. They were so in love. I have read the sweet and tender letters that were written to each other through World War II where my grandpa was a jet fighter pilot. My grandparents had 8 children, 4 during the war! My grandfather died 12 years before my grandma and this was the first time we have seen both of their graves. My little family (minus my little brother) went up to Bear River to spend some time. While driving through this little old town I saw an awesome old building. Too bad my camera was low on battery because I could have snapped a lot more photos. Too bad that I was wearing the company
BID LIGHTNING T shirt while my sister and mother looked too cute

****Mark and I have so few pictures together, it may seem like were not even a couple =( Any photographers or aspiring to be so, leave me a comment if you want to use us for subjects. We are really funny and nice****

Fun in Utah

May 27th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

My parents are downsizing from a 3 story house that they have lived in for over 25 years to a beautiful house up on the hill with a beautiful view. They needed to get their current house on the market but there was a lot of work to do to get it ready. I knew that this was going to be a stressful time for them and that they needed a lot of help. So I offered to come up for a month and help them. Eric drove us up to SLC and then he flew back to Bakersfield to work.
It was really hard to work on my parents house while taking care of 2 kids but it was better than not getting anything done. After being there for about a week I was getting burnt out and then my sister, Kim, flew out with her son Alex who is Aaron’s age. She got us all working again. Aaron loved having a little buddy around for him to play with.
It also helped that my sisters Cindy and Rebecca came up for the weekends to help as well. Then a couple of weeks later my other sister Melissa came out with her family from Japan to help and to vacation. With my brother, Craig, coming out twice from Texas for his sister in laws wedding and house hunting I had the opportunity to see all my siblings. It was fun hanging out with my family.
We sure did miss Eric a lot but I think the kids had fun playing at grandma’s house.
Here is Aaron with his cousin Alex who is 16 days younger than Aaron. It was so fun to see Aaron interacting with Alex. They were chasing each other around the house and playing outside together. They loved each other. I just wish that Alex didn’t live so far away.

Here I am with Melissa and Kim before Kim left to go back to Houston. Melissa and Kim only got to see each other for 24 hours. You can tell that we are all so tired. :) I love all my sisters and it is so hard being so far away from all them because I think we would have a lot of fun hanging out if we lived near each other.

Shame.

May 24th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

Not the kind that you are embarrassed about. More like the kind you laugh about and then deep down inside wish it weren’t so. I haven’t put a single word or photo here for over 2 months. No good excuse. Not too busy. Just doing other things. Staying in my pj’s all day. Traveling to visit family and friends in three different places. Salt Lake. Denver. Rochester. Refashioning t-shirts. Making baby gifts. You know how it goes. But I must say I was kicked in the pants when I realized that my sister-in-law can post amidst moving her family of four almost a thousand miles, not to mention while being basically 7-8 months pregnant. Forget it!

So in my attempt to have some self respect I am going to catch you up on our year. Here are few pictures of our recent and not so recent past.

Warning: There are twelve posts including this one so don’t feel pressure to read them all. Skim the pictures. I would.

Another fabulous adventure

May 24th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

Our next adventure took us Denver to visit my sister and her adorable family. Although I didn’t take many pictures, we had the best time. We were fortunate enough to get to go on their belated Easter egg hunt. No one does an Easter Egg Hunt quite like Mr. Joshua K. I had never seen anything like it. He had the kids on the lookout for bunnies. We drove to a nearby state park to try to find any eggs that had been missed by others the week before. Luckily, they were able to find some. It was great.

These three pictures were taken in the car on one of our many trips out.

I was able to see my dear friend Emily. We met when are husbands were in medical school together. Although we know live in different places nothing is quite like having lunch with a good friend. The conversation was great and so were the corndogs!

We went to the Zoo and the Aquarium while we were there. At the zoo we happened to be there the day the giraffe was giving birth. She was inside but Brooke and I managed to see two legs sticking out of her. Crazy stuff! Click here to see it!

My mom also got to come for the last few days Todd and I were there and she came to the aquarium with us. Both excursions were equally delightful.

I thought it was cute that Todd kept copying Matt. He was so good to him.

May

May 19th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

Is time not just cruising by?! I honestly can’t believe that May is wrapping up and June is just around the corner. I am SO ready for summer, however, I’m not sure what I’m going to do with Jack out of school! The boy needs things to do, and Mom is just a little too boring sometimes! Anyways, I’ll try to do a little recap of the month. And seeing that I haven’t taken any pictures, this post may be a bit more wordy than usual :)

Timothy’s Grandpa passed away this month. We will miss both Grandpa and Grandma Smith dearly. This picture was at Calahan’s blessing in SLC summer ’07

Speaking of Calahan lately this little spitfire of energy is my constant shadow. He sits on my lap while I work on photos, he’ll play by my desk or in the kitchen when I’m cooking, he has to have “mommy do it” which basically means only mommy can get him a drink, make him breakfast/lunch/dinner and all the snacks in between, only mommy can read him stories, play games etc etc. Most of the time I love being his number one… except when I need to go to the bathroom or want to shower! The other night as Tim and I just settled into bed Calahan started crying out for me. I took a deep breath, because I was exhausted and wanted to sleep, hopped out of my bed, turned on the hall light and walked down to his room. He was laying there half asleep, half crying for help. I asked him what was wrong and he said he was scared. It just about broke my heart. I kissed him and told him he didn’t have to be scared and that I loved him. He just looked up and said, “ok mommy” then he turned and fell right back asleep. I love this little boy. I love all his crazy ways, like how if he had the choice he’d wear jammies with his cowboy boots and his “robin” red sweatshirt EVERYDAY. How when I wash his clothes he runs up to me and says, “mommy, these clean?!” with the most enthusiastic grin he says “thank you mommy, thank you!” then hugs me and immediately strips down to put his freshly cleaned clothes on. How he is terribly picky and if you don’t do things the “right way” he’ll just throw what ever you were trying to give him across the room. Jack NEVER did that, seriously he never did. It makes me laugh when Cal does it, well most of the time I laugh, sometimes I just look at him and think, “really! you want to fight about this!” He’s so stubborn, knows just what he wants and I admire that about him. I can’t believe the boy will turn 3 this summer… he’s my baby!
Jack has become quite the little artist. He LOVES to draw and will sit at his desk every day and draw picture after picture. I absolutely love his creations. This picture above is Two Face from Batman. We’ve had a lot of conversations about Two Face lately. I hurt my leg in soccer and Jack was laying on my bed with me. He sprung up with excitement and said, “Mom, your hurt leg and your other leg, it’s like Two Face! One bad, one good!” I laughed and laughed at his observation, then squeezed him til he begged me to stop. Jack is sprouting into such a thinker and creator. Another one of his favorite topics is the “silent E” Out of the blue he’ll come up to Timothy or I and shout out a word that he thinks has a silent E, The other day he said, “dangerous has a silent E in it because A says it’s name” We try to explain to him that dangerous actually doesn’t have a silent E and then he’ll go quiet until he thinks of a new word that actually does have a silent E. He makes me smile every day. I love love being his mommy.

Jack and his best buddy Hunter. These two Star Wars fanatics would be tied hip to hip if they had the choice. Hunter has “the coolest house” according to Jack. The other day he asked if he could live at their house with all of their toys. Don’t you remember that friend that had all the cool things? Gotta love friends with all the cool stuff!

(this picture is from 2 years ago… kinda makes me miss my short hair!)
Timothy was sworn in last week to officaly be a lawyer in Utah. The poor boy didn’t want to go but thankfully he had to! It was the first official event that we’ve been to for his Law degree. Last year he loathed the idea of walking for graduation, so he just up and decided not to walk even though I pleaded on my knees for him to do it. You can imagine my giggly reaction when he said he “had to go” in order to be sworn in. Anyways, I’m sure proud of my man.
I’ve been busy with photos, helping my sister with her Delicious Health Classes in Midway, just finished The Help, we’ve been trying to get out to explore the beautiful mountains, so fart we’ve done 2 little hikes this spring, LOVE my Utah mountains! We also got a family pass to our local gym and are loving it! Tim and I have been working out and then we’ll grab the boys and all go swimming, they have a really cool inside play pool that the boys would live in if we let them. Anyways, this is us in a nutshell! Hope your May has been fabulous! We are very much looking forward June and all the wonderful things that summer will bring.

The Farm

Yesterday the boys and I went on a little journey to Redmond Heritage Farms. It took us quite a while to get down there, but they were highly entertained thanks to my sister’s car DVD player. Once we got to the farm they immediately ran out to watch the animals. I think their favorite part of the farm was the baby chicks (500 of them) and the farm dogs that protected the chickens. We also got to see how the farmers milk their cows, the room smelled like warm sweet milk, I was surprised at how strong the smell was, good thing it wasn’t a bad smell! Redmond farms is a raw milk supplier here in Utah. It was cool to go out to the farm and see the cows and chickens graze and rest as they please. We all had a wonderful time! If you ever get a chance I dare you to taste raw milk, it doesn’t taste as terrible as it sounds! You can click on their website to read more about them.

Happiness is…

April 27th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

When I was at my mom’s house this past week, I noticed a book she has called “Happiness Is A Warm Puppy”. It’s full of little things that are happy or make you feel happy. I remember this book from my childhood and, truthfully, never really got it. What do you mean happiness is a puppy? But all of a sudden, this past week, it has really clicked.

Here are a few of the things that complete “Happiness Is…” for me:

- On our walk today Lyvia was picking dandelions out of the grass on the park strip. We walked by a rather forgotten yard that was filled with the little yellow weeds. Lyvia shouted, “Mom, look dandelions!” “Yeah, they have a lot, don’t they?” “Lucky,” she said, looking at the lawn in awe.

- Amelia’s little smiles while she sleeps.

- Jason being home on the weekend.

- Finding my favorite sandals in a box after weeks of looking everywhere.

- Discovering a bunch of clothes I’d forgotten about in that same box. It was like a holiday! Well, really fitting into anything that isn’t classified as maternity is joyful.

- Eating strawberries like they are going out of style.

- Lyvia singing and putting on shows for me while I nurse Amelia.

- Playing a new, WAY fun game (Bang!) with my sister-in-law,her hubby and my doppelganger, Melissa. My competitive spirit was surfacing! I feel a Settlers of Catan tournament coming on…

- Napping in the middle of the day without guilt.

- Saying no to some things. “I’m sorry- I have a newborn. We’ll have to pass this time.” are very powerful words.

- Indy playing fetch and just hanging out at my feet. Plus, she’s totally sweet with Lyv and Millie.

- Watching my kids interact with their grandparents and great-grandparents.

- Going out for dinner.

- Long walks.

- Being able to swim again!!!

A year (or so…) in review

April 23rd, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

It's been an exciting year to say the least, to start off I'll introduce our second line of Foxpaws Shoes (the baby shoe company that my sister and I own and operate.)  We call it the “Chic Collection”.
Foxpaws had a very fun first year.  We are now selling in about 50 stores across the country and even internationally.  We were featured this past year on a few television shows and in several magazines including US weekly Magazine, Pregnancy and Newborn Magazine, Wasatch Woman, Kimora, PetuniaPicklebottom.com just to name a few.  We feel very blessed, it has been a fun adventure.
The new line will be available to purchase on our website http://www.foxpawsshoes.com/ in a few weeks.
The website is currently going through a renovation of sorts, but will be revamped, and more fabulous (hopefully) here in the next little while.  You know how construction is :)

Time for some pictures

March 30th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

I have been absolutely horrible about taking pictures lately. Anytime we are out and about I never have my camera to take pictures of the fun things we are doing. Honestly, the funnest thing we do around here is go to the park. The kids love going to the park. I try to take them a couple of times a week. Even Kaylee enjoys the park. She loves the swing and most recently the slide. She pushes herself down the slide if I just sit her up top.

Well Aaron is 2 and a half now and he definitely has a case of the terrible two’s. He gets into stuff and pushes his sister down whenever he gets the chance. Timeout is not his favorite place but he knows when he deserves it because he runs away from me. :) At the same time he is the sweetest little boy. He loves to give kisses and hugs and he loves to sit on mommy’s lap. He is a big helper when I ask him to do things. He is really picking up on talking more and more. I am so impressed with the words and songs he had learned. He has recently discovered Thomas the Train and Barney and now that is all he wants to watch. However, he would much rather go outside and play if he has the chance.
Kaylee is 10 and 1/2 months old. I can hardly believe that in just 6 weeks my little girl will be 1 year old. She has grown up so much in just the little time that we have been here. She is crawling all over the place and even started to figure out how to stand on her own. She loves playing with toys. Just yesterday she learned her first word, ball. That was Aaron’s first word too. She loves to laugh and play games like peekaboo, patty cake, and passing a ball back and forth. I look at my little girl and can’t help but think how beautiful she is and I am so grateful to have her in my family.
These two are trying to get along but sometimes they are just brother and sister. Aaron has the urge to push Kaylee down whenever she gets in his way or he doesn’t like what she is doing. Even if it didn’t hurt Kaylee she will still cry and crawl up to me as if she is “tattling” on her brother. However, these kids love to play together sometimes and really get each other laughing.
Aaron loves to give Kaylee some kisses. She is just trying to get away.
Mother-Daughter picture at Denny’s.
This is a picture of Aaron asleep on the Love Sac in his room. I guess he fell asleep looking at a picture of airplanes and helicopters. (His favorite)
We really have enjoyed having Sugar back. It took a little bit of adjusting after not having her for 2 years. I think Sugar and Aaron are really starting to get along. I am glad that Sugar has decided to be tolerable of my kids. I feel bad that I don’t give her much attention as I used to but I think Aaron gives her plenty of attention.
Everything else is going pretty well for us. Eric is enjoying his internship. We just found out today that they are unable to offer him a job right now since things are really slow at work but they have extended his internship through July. I think they are hoping that by then they may be in a position to hire him. It is a little scary not having a secure job yet but at least they aren’t kicking him out when his internship is really suppose to be up in 2 weeks. Hopefully this gives Eric enough time to find a new job if things don’t work out with this company.

I am doing really good. I enjoy staying at home with my kids and spending my time with them however I do get a bit cabin feverish sometimes. We are hoping to purchase a 2nd car soon but we will see. I am still working hard at losing weight but I am definitely learning that it is important to have patience. I have now been going to the gym every morning for the past 8 weeks. I have also been on weight watchers for 6 weeks now. I have only lost about 7-8lbs but I am slowly seeing the scale go down. I am really enjoying my workouts and I keep surprising myself. Yesterday I slept in and didn’t go to the gym so I decided to go after I put the kids to sleep last night. I once again hit a new record for myself as I ran for 3.5 miles in 42 minutes and burned 500 calories. I feel so good after a workout like that. I still have a ways to go before I hit my goal weight but it is really nice being in a routine to exercise on a regular basis and eating a little better, although I could still do better in the food dept.

Well that is what my family has been up to lately. We definitely feel blessed and watched over and I am grateful that I have been given so much.

A little bit of this and That

I've been kind of slacking off as far as postings go.  here's a wrap up of what's been going on.  Marc and his sister Heather took Riley and Garrett to the Sportsman's Expo last weekend.  They had a fishing pond where you could catch a trout.  Riley caught the biggest one! But of course when they were pulling it out of the water it flipped off the line.  Riley also got new glasses.  We were having some fitting issues with his other ones and they were really tight against his face.  His new ones are so adorable.  So here are a few pics of the latest happenings.

Family Update

February 22nd, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

I know that I have been a really terrible blogger lately so here is the update!

Jared: Is still working as the GM of Red Robin. He really enjoys the restaurant but wishes he had more free time. He was able to go to the annual Red Robin Convention in Orlando a couple of weeks ago and had the best time. They were able to go to Universal Studios twice where they closed off part of the park for them. He ate like a king and stayed at the JW Marriott.(yes I was very jealous) He also learned a lot of great new things and it was really nice to have him come home so excited to be apart of Red Robin. Jared has also started working out and has lost 15 pounds. I am so proud of him!

Brooklyn: Is still loving pre-school and dance. She loves to play with her friends and is always trying to plan our next activity. Brooklyn getting excited for our new baby and loves to throw out names for him some of our favorites are Rudolf, snowman, and every boy name in her pre-school class. She is very opinionated about everything and loves to tell us no.

Brady: He is our crazy boy. He is potty trained which went better the expected I only wanted to give up on week 2.5. He is doing really well other then flushing his “undies wares” down the toilet at my parents house. Brady loves to drive his sister crazy. He has also learned some “great” new tricks like leaving McDonald’s when Daddy is distracted, falling off the kitchen counter on his head and blacking out, and biting. We are hoping that these things all lose their appeal really fast.

As for me I am 35 weeks pregnant and ready to be done. This pregnancy has been the hardest of the three so more then likely it is the last. We are excited for baby boy the 2nd to come to our family. I have been really busy just trying to keep up with life and all of the fun that comes with it. I have been working at Carino’s as a hostess on Monday nights and have enjoyed it. We are now in preparation mode and it is really strange to think that the next post could be to announce our new arrival.

p.s. I am having a hard time getting the back ground to change on my blog. If you have any suggestions let me know.

A week’s worth of blog ideas that didn’t make the cut:

  • Jason was chewing gum last night while reading Lyvia her bedtime story. She asked him, “What you have in there?” “Gum.” “Oh. I had some gum last year,” she says matter-of-factly. Jason and I laughed hysterically. In another incident- she was pretending to be the Mom at the grocery store today and she turned to the cashier and said, loudly, “It’s credit!” and proceeded to swipe my library card through the reader with perfect precision. I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or be totally embarrassed. I still don’t know how I could make these into a whole post…but they just had to be shared.
  • I went to the gym to walk on the treadmill- but the only treadmills that were open were one’s facing the brick wall. I seriously waited for 15 minutes until one that overlooked the pool became available. Who wants to stare at a brick wall while you work out? Watching the high school diving team is way more entertaining- the time just flies by!
  • A few people on Channel 4 News drive me crazy. Especially that Chris Vanocur. I’m sure my sister Bailey also has strong feelings about Marti Skold.
  • Speaking of news people- I now have a soft spot for David James. All of this sports watching with Jason has made me actually interested in what is going on with the Jazz and now David James is my guy. I hope Jason doesn’t get jealous.
  • I’m a jeans and top kind of gal. So why is it, that when you are pregnant, suddenly the maternity clothes people think you want to dress like a birthday cupcake? Ribbons that tie, bows everywhere, strange floral prints, dresses closely akin to mumus- I don’t wear this stuff normally, so why would I change my entire persona when I’m pregnant? Thankfully, my mom, Grammy and friends have steered me to quite a few good looking maternity clothes- so I feel a bit stylish. One problem: I’m now thinking that my maternity wardrobe is much more fashionable than my regular clothes.
  • How many of these “Judge” shows are on TV? Are people watching this stuff? Are we really interested in neighbors squabbling or traffic violations? I can see all that stuff out my front window at least 3 days a week!
  • I’m feeling a lot more “with it” now that the stuff I have been into all my life is back in vogue. Things like: Frank Sinatra, cooking at home, knitting, being thrifty, real mail, short hair, cupcakes, kind people, glasses, girls night.
  • So, it’s doppelganger week on Facebook… apparently. You are supposed to post a picture of the famous person who you most look like. (Seriously, who comes up with this stuff?!) Anyway, I’m thinking either Melissa McCarthy (Sookie from Gilmore Girls) or ElastiGirl. Anyone?

Hibernation

January 27th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

What’s a person supposed to do when it’s FREEZING outside and the air is so cold it hurts? You can visit friends, play Guitar Hero, fly to a warmer climate (except we have to wait until April because Marshal is in a Kaplan class until then), go to the gym, blah blah blah…or READ A BOOK. I love books! In the past 2 weeks I read 2 different books and they were both super entertaining, but in very different ways. So if you’re a book-lover like me and you’re looking for your next read, here are two of my recommendations. And there are no spoilers so it’s ok to read my descriptions.

My friend Andrea gave me the first book, The Hunger Games. Ok, picture this…some time not too far in the future America has collapsed and there is a new nation called Panem, and the new government is super 1984-ish (as in the book 1984, duh, but you never know who’s reading). Now, Panem is like 1984 because the government is bossy and sneaky but some things are still like America. For example, Panem has REALITY TV! And how does The Capitol (that’s the ruling city/state/whatever in charge of Panem’s 12 districts) use reality TV? To scare, control and suppress its citizens, of course.

The book is about an annual competition called The Hunger Games. Kind of a weird name for a game, right? Well, it’s a NASTY competition where each of Panem’s districts must randomly select two “tributes” (a boy and a girl, both teenagers) to compete in a televised fight to the death. The tributes are basically dropped into an “arena” (but like the size of a national park or Rhode Island) and they have to kill the others to win. Oh, and remember it’s all televised so the entire nation is watching the tributes kill each other.

My mind was racing when I read this book. How cruel that The Capitol forces its districts to sacrifice two young people each year for sport (and a reminder to never rebel). And how awful that it’s a national TV show! Can you imagine? Although the plot might sound brutal, don’t worry. The book is tame and not too graphic. And you will LOVE the main character, Katniss, because she is smart and strong. She’s competing in The Hunger Games and the book is written in 1st person so you get to be right by her side as she dukes it out in the arena.

GO READ THIS BOOK! I read it in less than 24 hours. And then go read the sequel, which I need to buy ASAP.

One thing I should mention about this book before you Ph.D.’s go reading it…this book is “young adult” fiction. But don’t worry, you probably won’t notice. I only knew it was “young adult” fiction because the text was bigger. And maybe it’s a little less complicated than something like Atlas Shrugged but you will be so entertained you won’t care.

Now for the second book…I just finished The Forgotten Garden last night. I loved its complexity, scenery, characters, secrets, surprises, almost everything. This book is DEEP and MYSTERIOUS and COMPLICATED but has less action than the other book (so read this one first). What I didn’t love was the author’s annoying habit of focusing on the scenery and not on the drama. It was kind of like being at the Super Bowl but the announcers are talking in detail about the turf and chalk lines while the game is happening. Like hello author, thank you for describing the pretty rose bushes and flower petals but tell me more about the BIG NAUGHTY, DARK SECRETS that happened in the garden!! I was so eager for the drama (that’s why I read, duh) that I wanted to skip all of the fluff. But that’s just me.

Even though I just kind of complained about the book, I still think it’s a great read. I couldn’t put it down. My mom and sister both loved it too. The book is all about discovering a dark family secret (or two or three). Like why did the “Authoress” put 4 year old Nell on a boat, tell her she’d be right back and never return? And who is the “Authoress” and why did she take Nell from her family in the first place? And why is Linus so creepy…does he love his sister a little too much? And who is “the bad man” and why is Georgiana scared he will find her? So many crazy questions but you get all the answers in the end.

I’m looking for another book to read, so let me know if you have a suggestion. :) Happy reading!

things I think about while waiting at the doctor's office…

  • Whatever happened to Tae Bo?
  • Can I still reach to paint my own toe nails?
  • Various cupcake/frosting combinations for my sister’s birthday party.
  • Is Lyvia too young for glitter glue creations?
  • Lyvia is for sure old enough for glitter glue creations.
  • I want a toasted bagel with cream cheese. Now.
  • I wonder where the tree in that painting is.
  • I may need to shave my legs sometime before this baby is delivered.
  • Why can I not remember that nurse’s name? I see her every couple of weeks.
  • Different furniture arrangements for my basement rooms.
  • My top three names for the new baby.

Yeah. It is odd- but that is really what I think about!

Now that football is over and the dance concert is finished and

December 17th, 2009 Classmate Blogs No comments

Now that football is over and the dance concert is finished and getting nominated for Homecoming is long past, here’s what Randy has been up to:

Bowling on the school team
(250+ average and tons of scholarship money already won)

Performing at the holiday concert in the school choir
(This is the first year he’s done choir instead of orchestra.)

Checking out the lights at Temple Square with his friends
(Yes, I actually followed them around with a camera.)

The only thing more depressing than not really having anything to blog about, is providing constant updates on the exciting life and times of your baby brother. I’m going to have to change the name of this blog from “Being Carly” to “Being Randy’s Sister”.

a penny for my thoughts…

  • It’s a pet peeve of mine when people complain about how tired they are. And then somehow it always turns into a battle to compare how many hours of sleep each person got. Does saying it out loud make you feel less tired? Take a nap! Ok…rant over.
  • I have no idea where the remotes are to my TV. For some reason this reminds me of watching episodes of Batman with Adam West at our cabin on an old black & white TV with big antenna coming up from the top of the set. It had the clunky, old knobs to change the volume and channel- after all, there were only like 8 channels back then!
  • Lyv’s naps are becoming more and more normal again. Can you see me jumping for joy!?!
  • Some days (ahem, like today, ahem) I just feel out of sorts. The pregnancy nausea plays into that- but I think I need to start looking for a project. Nothing to bring me out of “hohum” like a good, old-fashioned project!
  • I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before- but I happened to be married to the most wonderful man ever. If I ever needed proof, it has come since we’ve given up the binky. Where I am impatient and just let Lyv cry it out- he has been the best about reading stories, comforting and snuggling with Lyvia at bedtime. He’ll sit with her in her room until she gets really sleepy, rubbing her back or just rocking her. She has become even more attached to him- asking, “Where’s my daddy?” when she wakes up in the morning or after naps. Jason has saved my sanity and set an excellent example of the kind of parent I really want to be. Like I said, he is just the best!
  • I loved LDS Women’s Conference this weekend. Sometimes hearing someone else say something I already know solidifies it in my brain. Especially Sister Thompson’s “Mind the Gap” talk! Listen to it here.
  • Fall is coming. The weatherman says Wednesday will be my kind of day, cool and cloudy. Maybe I’ll even pull out a sweater for good measure! I can’t wait until that distinct fall smell begins- crispy leaves, sweet candy corn, cold air, crock-pot dinners and burnt pumpkins from Jack-O-Lanterns.

July 5th: Kaylee's Blessing

August 4th, 2009 Classmate Blogs No comments

On Sunday, July 5th Kaylee was blessed. We felt it would be neat to bless her in Utah with the family there. We decided to have an intimate meeting at my parents house with family and a few close friends. It worked out very nicely. Eric’s parents flew in from Texas and his sister came up from Las Vegas. His grandparents live in the area so they were able to attend as well. I had all my siblings there except for Craig because he flew back to Texas that morning. I really liked the small meeting for Kaylee’s blessing. We had some refreshments following the blessing. Thanks to my parents for letting us bless Kaylee in your home.

I know I am her mother but I think she looks adorable in her blessing dress.
