What’s a person supposed to do when it’s FREEZING outside and the air is so cold it hurts? You can visit friends, play Guitar Hero, fly to a warmer climate (except we have to wait until April because Marshal is in a Kaplan class until then), go to the gym, blah blah blah…or READ A BOOK. I love books! In the past 2 weeks I read 2 different books and they were both super entertaining, but in very different ways. So if you’re a book-lover like me and you’re looking for your next read, here are two of my recommendations. And there are no spoilers so it’s ok to read my descriptions.

My friend Andrea gave me the first book, The Hunger Games. Ok, picture this…some time not too far in the future America has collapsed and there is a new nation called Panem, and the new government is super 1984-ish (as in the book 1984, duh, but you never know who’s reading). Now, Panem is like 1984 because the government is bossy and sneaky but some things are still like America. For example, Panem has REALITY TV! And how does The Capitol (that’s the ruling city/state/whatever in charge of Panem’s 12 districts) use reality TV? To scare, control and suppress its citizens, of course.
The book is about an annual competition called The Hunger Games. Kind of a weird name for a game, right? Well, it’s a NASTY competition where each of Panem’s districts must randomly select two “tributes” (a boy and a girl, both teenagers) to compete in a televised fight to the death. The tributes are basically dropped into an “arena” (but like the size of a national park or Rhode Island) and they have to kill the others to win. Oh, and remember it’s all televised so the entire nation is watching the tributes kill each other.
My mind was racing when I read this book. How cruel that The Capitol forces its districts to sacrifice two young people each year for sport (and a reminder to never rebel). And how awful that it’s a national TV show! Can you imagine? Although the plot might sound brutal, don’t worry. The book is tame and not too graphic. And you will LOVE the main character, Katniss, because she is smart and strong. She’s competing in The Hunger Games and the book is written in 1st person so you get to be right by her side as she dukes it out in the arena.
GO READ THIS BOOK! I read it in less than 24 hours. And then go read the sequel, which I need to buy ASAP.
One thing I should mention about this book before you Ph.D.’s go reading it…this book is “young adult” fiction. But don’t worry, you probably won’t notice. I only knew it was “young adult” fiction because the text was bigger. And maybe it’s a little less complicated than something like Atlas Shrugged but you will be so entertained you won’t care.

Now for the second book…I just finished The Forgotten Garden last night. I loved its complexity, scenery, characters, secrets, surprises, almost everything. This book is DEEP and MYSTERIOUS and COMPLICATED but has less action than the other book (so read this one first). What I didn’t love was the author’s annoying habit of focusing on the scenery and not on the drama. It was kind of like being at the Super Bowl but the announcers are talking in detail about the turf and chalk lines while the game is happening. Like hello author, thank you for describing the pretty rose bushes and flower petals but tell me more about the BIG NAUGHTY, DARK SECRETS that happened in the garden!! I was so eager for the drama (that’s why I read, duh) that I wanted to skip all of the fluff. But that’s just me.
Even though I just kind of complained about the book, I still think it’s a great read. I couldn’t put it down. My mom and sister both loved it too. The book is all about discovering a dark family secret (or two or three). Like why did the “Authoress” put 4 year old Nell on a boat, tell her she’d be right back and never return? And who is the “Authoress” and why did she take Nell from her family in the first place? And why is Linus so creepy…does he love his sister a little too much? And who is “the bad man” and why is Georgiana scared he will find her? So many crazy questions but you get all the answers in the end.
I’m looking for another book to read, so let me know if you have a suggestion.
Happy reading!
