It's almost like she had the hiccups because my sister fed her soda. That would have been cool.

June 29th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

I promise one day, in the very near future, I will post something other than my ADORABLE niece. Because, I do have a great story about how Justin and I had a deal going for 2 months that we wouldn’t drink soda. And well, if you read my blog here, here or here, you know that I fail miserably at quitting soda. Anyway, that story is in the works.

Until then, I will post this video of Ava I took when she was merely 4 days old. AND when she had the hiccups. Not a lie, I have watched this video no less that 50 times. She sounds like a mouse. And I think it is the cutest thing ever.

Enjoy.

Tender Mercy

I have been having one of those stretches in life when you are not exactly thrilled about the person you are or are becoming. Not quite impressed with what I reflect in my words and deeds on a day to day basis. So I have been looking for inspiration. Reading talks. Praying. Thinking. Reading some more. Today I came across this video. I know many of you follow NieNie. I have heard her story but haven’t really followed her blog. I knew she was an inspiration to many and today I added myself to their numbers. Because of her experiences and her humility, she gave me the gift I had been searching for: perspective. It really wasn’t one particular thing she said although there are quite a few pearls. It was the Spirit that washed over me as I listened to this video.

So today I say “Thanks.” Thanks to Stephanie for sharing. Thanks be to the most merciful and wise Father who always helps us understand what we really need.

Thoughts From an ADD Lady

I’m almost 99% sure I’m ADD. Can hardly focus on one thing for more than 5 minutes! The web feeds my ADD. I can be working on my computer, think of something else and immediately get distracted, have the urge to google something or get caught up reading some article or facebook… you know what I mean right?! The same thing applies to my life, and when I say my life I’m talking about the BIG picture. You know me and that gigantic ring of eternity. I get so caught up in me, what I’m doing, what I’m going to do next, what I want, what I don’t want, I wish this and that… all worldly things mind you. And what happens when I walk this path of me-ness I forget about the important things, I forget to appreciate the little things, I forget to take a step back and breathe for a moment and think, I forget to pray, I forget to be grateful, I forget to do my personal spiritual study, I forget to pay attention! Well tonight I came across this little video, and the shining star is Stephanie Nielson aka Nie Nie. If your life hasn’t been graced in the blog world by this amazing woman yet, you better get on board. Nothing screams more joy, faith and triumph over trials than her story. She is an inspiration, and she’s always good at pulling on my heart strings when it comes to motherhood. A while ago, she nearly died in a plane crash and now suffers with more than half of her body burned and scarred, she’s had surgery after surgery and still presses forward. My favorite quote from her on the video is about motherhood. At times I struggle with the demands of being a Mom, not that I don’t love and cherish being a Mom, but it’s easy to forget who you are and just get caught up in the routine of things. Anyways, here is my favorite quote from her, and I love it because it kicks me in the pants, it’s a reminder to me to not get distracted, but stay focussed on what motherhood is.
“I’m just grateful for the opportunity to be here on earth. The opportunity to be a mother… I view my roll now as more divine. Something more, not just a mother who wakes up and makes her kids food, it’s a mother who enriches and teaches about the gospel of Jesus Christ. But it’s a privilege, and I see it more as a privilege now I think.
To me beauty and motherhood are one. They are the same thing.”

Then she goes on and talks about how the trials of the plane crash
have transformed her view on life,

“I am grateful for this trial, it is a blessing…”

Elder Holland:
“When suffering we may in fact be nearer to God than we’ve ever been in our entire lives. Regarding our journey the Lord says,

“I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left. My Spirit shall be in your hearts and my angels round about you to bare you up.”

That is the everlasting declaration of God’s love and care for us.
Including perhaps especially in times of trouble.

I have no doubt that God loves all of this children. And what I think is so fascinating is that he didn’t say I will protect you from this or that, but he basically said I will be with you. As a mother I look at my boys, they will grow up and have to make their own choices, they will experience hard things, have their set of trials etc. I can’t protect them from harm, I can’t make sure they never feel pain, loneliness or grief, but I can tell them I will always be there for them and I will always love them. This experience of motherhood has increased my faith and knowledge that God indeed LOVES all, he is there with open arms at all times to welcome us. His plan wasn’t for us to come to earth and have a cake walk, but to experience life, trials, pain, happiness, joy… and we all know you can’t have one without the other.
He is there for us, ALWAYS.
Ok now that I’ve shared my thoughts on the video, you can watch it and gather up your own!
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

California update

January 29th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

I guess it is time for an update. Well we have been in Bakersfield for over a month and so far we like it. We love our house and the extra space that comes with it. Eric didn’t start his job until the 18th so we had him around for awhile. It was nice but we did a whole lot of nothing. We are so broke from our move that we couldn’t really get out and experience Bakersfield while he was home. Plus we came in the winter when it is cold and always foggy so we haven’t really been able to make it out to the beach or anywhere like that.
We really like our ward. There are a lot of other young families for us to get to know. Although our ward boundaries are a lot bigger than I am used to so there are not very many members that live close by me as far as I know.
The kids love their new home as well. They are both growing up and learning so much.
Aaron has really improved his talking. He still has a long way to go but I am understanding him a lot more. He is singing songs and playing pretend with his toys all the time. His new favorite thing is the “Harry Potter Puppet Pals and the Mysterious ticking noise” you tube video. He saw it once and has asked to watch it over and over again. Now he will get whatever toys or objects to act out the video by himself. It is pretty cute. Aaron is also loves our dog sugar. We got her back from Eric’s parents when we moved here and Aaron couldn’t be happier. He loves having a dog to chase around the house. I think Sugar loves Aaron but gets annoyed by him sometimes. She loves having someone to play with but hates it when he comes up and grabs her when she is resting.

Kaylee is getting bigger and bigger every day. She is so close to crawling but not there yet. She can go from sitting up to her belly and then starts to kick her legs and wave her arms like she is swimming. She has mastered scooting backwards for over a month now. I have been expecting her to figure out how to go forward but she is still working on it. She has definitely hit the stage of being more squirmy when I hold her so it can be very difficult to hold her in my lap.
Aaron and Kaylee still love each other but they are still siblings so we need to work on sharing and taking turns. Aaron keeps pushing Kaylee down when he is frustrated (thank goodness we have soft carpet again) and he has discovered that results in a timeout. Overall these kids are pretty happy and are having fun.

It has been a bit of an adjustment for me to be a stay at home mom. For the last two years I have been a stay at home mom but with a job. It is absolutely wonderful being able to devote all my time and attention to my kids without having the responsibility of the dorm. However, it gets pretty lonely with no one to talk to but my kids. We only have one car right now so I am pretty much stuck at home. We try to go on walks when the weather is nice but that hasn’t been very often these last couple of weeks. I am excited that there is a park in my neighborhood just a 10 minute walk away. That place will be seeing a lot of me.

Eric is enjoying his job. We are excited that this internship will definitely be a full time job once he is done with his internship. Half his office is LDS because they have done a lot of recruiting at BYU-Hawaii and BYU-Idaho. He may be working a lot of hours but we could use the money to save up for a car for me.

State of the Union

January 28th, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

Kyle and I watched the State of the Union together last night. Well, we watched as much as we could through YouTube’s crap live feed. I suppose I should be grateful that they were streaming it, since we don’t have a television hooked up, but it’s really hard to listen to the nation’s leader when the video is trying to constantly refresh.

Kyle and I actually see eye to eye on most politics. This wasn’t true when we met, but as we’ve gotten older I’ve become less liberal and Kyle’s become less conservative, so we ended up meeting in the middle. I personally don’t think you have to agree on politics to be in a happy marriage, but I have to admit that it’s nice to not have to hash things out in a back and forth whenever we watch the news. We’re both pretty big fans of Obama and there wasn’t much in the State of the Union that we could criticize or accuse the president of glossing over. That ten thousand dollar four year education credit would have sure come in handy a couple years ago, but what you gonna do?

I was a little anxious when it was all over, though, and I started to feel like we were going to be stuck in a recession forever, that we’d never be able to afford a good education for our children, and that things like social security and health care could fall out from under us at any moment. My student loans suddenly seemed insurmountable and my job search seemed impossible. I even started to worry about childhood obesity, picturing stampedes of fat children mowing down the parks of my youth.

I expressed some of this to Kyle (not the fat children part) and he pointed out that I had missed the message from the President. He reminded me that things are hard, but we’re working in the right direction and all we can do is wake up every morning and try. He also pointed out how lucky we are. We have great health care, we’re living in a nice place, and we’re making enough to set aside savings for a house and a baby. We’re both educated and healthy, with strong support both from our families and from the community. We’re also both blessed right now to be really happy in our quiet little lives.

It is hard, sometimes, to see the glass half-full. I feel frustrated with the contrast between where I thought I would be at this point in my life and where I’ve ended up. The fact that I’ve ended up happy isn’t enough sometimes to cover up the fact that I thought I’d be swimming in money, making a name for myself professionally, and raising lots of orphaned Chinese baby girls. I turn 27 on Sunday and, unfortunately, 27 has always been my “grown up” year. I think it’s a number I came up with in the sixth grade, when I calculated how long it would take me to get a doctorate. I always assumed that at 27 I’d be ready to conquer the world…an assumption that feels really far away right now.

But I count my blessings, believe in Obama, and love my husband. And I’m still trying.

Maybe 28?

Altitude Design Summit Kicked My Butt

January 22nd, 2010 Classmate Blogs No comments

I am absolutely exhausted and completely inspired. After spending my day at Altitude Design Summit, I am experiencing creative energy overload. I have so much to share about the conference and even more to process before I step back up to the work I do, but I just don’t have the pep tonight to post any of it. So, in the meantime, I’m going to just leave this video:

I had the amazing opportunity to meet this artist, DJ Earworm, today and his talent blew me away. Hit play. You’ll love it.

Riley's New Car

November 12th, 2009 Classmate Blogs No comments

Riley got his power chair on wednesday. I’m calling it his new car because it cost more than my car did when I bought it. I was a little worried that he would have troubles with it as far as holding the joystick but he did great for his first time. He can’t hold his head up so they gave us this cool collar for him to wear. When we first put him in it his reaction was “wow!” and he kept going around in circles. Check out the video for a closer look.

My poor twinner!

September 6th, 2009 Classmate Blogs No comments

So sad…Rachel is in the hospital right now because she is having a major issue with her Crohn’s Disease. I will spare you the details, but lets just say things are coming out undigested. Its kind of scary to think you can recognize your food when it comes out. Seconds?

Being the skeptical, logical sister I am, I used to think Rachel was a hypochondriac (so cruel I was) but now I know better. She has to deal with annoying digestive problems every day. Oh Rach I wish I could take away the nuisance!! I would if I could!!

If you want to learn more about Crohn’s you can go to http://www.crohnsonline.com/. And please be nice to your fellow Crohnies because they are dealing with super annoying problems. If you need proof just ask Rach.

Love you, Rach! Sorry your guts suck right now.

Oh and here are some awesome Womb-mate pictures.

Ahhhh…we look like sisters, right?

Pretty typical.

No one can get her to shut her mouth! ha ha

Ahhhhhh I love us.

We’re practically famous.
